It sounds like the car is in fail safe mode(won't go over 2500 rpm).
It is usually a major sensor that is inop, like a MAFS. Check to see if all the sensors are plugged in.

unplug it. If the car runs better it MIGHT be a bad MAFS.
The best way is to compare the signal voltage against the specs in a service manual.
You will need a wiring diagram and a DVOM.
