I installed a stillen short shifter and no problems whatsoever. Just on the install the first time, I installed it a bit too tight and then loosened it and it's been great eversince.

If it came down to removing the complete clear coat I would just have someone professionally refinish them. The clear coat protects the finish, so it might look good taking out the complete clear...
