Correct. Just make sure the drive gear from the sensor is not still in the transmission. Did you purchase a new speedo sensor?

It goes in the top rear of the transmission. Take a look at the sensor, it has to be in pieces at this point.

I didn't bother with that, I used a dial indicator with a magnetic base on my workbench. Took 3-4 readings of free play and went with the average.

Do you have a Ohm meter? Sounds like a bad coil, the O2 faults are likely from that as well. You need to test the coils to see which one crapped out. There are other ways to do this, but an ohm...

If your going to fix your current engine, you will have to deal with timing anyway. The timing part is really not that hard, just seems like an obstacle before you do it.
