Why do you think it might be this? Does a low battery just cause all kinds of weird problems or is this a known issue with low battery/dying alternator?

Oh yeah, mine used to chirp more over bumps and stuff because the bearings are wearing out and bumps cause the shaft to move around more - hence more squeaking.
