And yet higher HP cars with manual or auto trans can get more MPG and faster times. CVTs are there because Nissan invested A LOT of money into the company making them. It is purely a cost saver...

I believe a 5.5gen has the 1/4 record at 14 flat and the 60 is 5.8/5.9ish

They are BS. The faux shifts were added because the high RPM drone would be too obnoxious. The HP sweet spot on this revised VQ is a lofty 6k+ RPM so they can also keep you away from the peak power...

Has anyone tried to install an upgraded oil cooling kit (like Stillen) to help reduce the oil burn associated with the 3.5? Question 2: would this even help?

Maxima gained it's identity via performance and good looks. The 6th & 7th gen has obviously washed that away- losing purist in the wake.
