For now, it appears it was the new battery....

For now, it appears it was the new battery. AutoZone charged it, put it back in and nothing!
They replaced it and everything is OK for now.

At lower speeds my transmission downshifts with a pretty good jerk and sometimes it does the same thing when shifting in the lower gears. It doesn't appear to be a serious transmission problem...

Thanks for your input. It looks like the problem is beyond my capabilities. Could be the distributor, but I don't want to start replacing expensive parts only to find out they were not the problem.
