I tried finding that answer for you with no luck. I would do what you suggested and call your Nissan dealer with the VIN.
I wish I could be 100% but I am pretty darn sure you need the short wire....

The long wired one was for the RE4F04A and the short was for the RE4F04B. You should have the RE4F04B and need the short wire. I was under the impression that all USDM 02-03 Maximas had the RE4F04B....

The 5.5 gen is most certainly compatible. Where did you get the cable? Most of these cables are cheap as hell and faulty ones are common.
When you try to connect, is the car on or just in ACC...
