I agree, but I knew my valve covers leaked, and I watched oil slowly drip out of the cam position sensor, so I know that needs replacing as well.

Yes about the RTV. Like I said, area around the valve covers is nice and dry. And yes 99% sure it was smoke. Seriously doubt it was steam.
