they should come one when the thermostat opens...

they should come one when the thermostat opens when the car is stopped the radiator temp should rise and when it hits a point about 3/4 up the temp gauge the fans should kick on, if they dont it...

This is very sad, I couldn't imagine that happening to my max @ 135k she hasn't even seen half her life(she's not as clean as your max was). I hope your 5th gen brings you just as much joy for longer!
