This is perfectly normal. I think your car in 4 even though you think you are in 3rd. When you take the over drive off you are forcing the tranny back in to 3rd, the overdrive locks out 4th gear so...

you turned the screw to far
that is why your rpms are below 500 so the car wants to stall. Just turn it in the other direction until your rpms are around 700 or so. Don't worry I do that some times when I want to fool around...
