yup the climate control is auto. On my 5th gen even if I start with the key in the ignition (or remote start) if the motor is cold it won't blow anything until the coolant reaches a certain temp.

I notice the same with my 01 Maxima. It doesn't slip because revs don't jump it just hangs for a split second.

I think its from 2nd to 3rd that I notice it more. I'll have to check it again...

If you can find it, use GM Synchromesh Friction Modified (has to be Friction modified). That fluid is awesome and does wonders on 1000's of Honda/Acura manual gear boxes.
