Chill smog place to go to in San Diego or LA area?

So my 96 max is due for her first ever cali smog check. She's originally from Maryland...a lot less emissions restrictions over there

I've got a K&N CONE AIR FILTER, stock headers, BUDGET Y-PIPE, stock cat converter, and stock exhaust. I've got a chance of passing emissions if I don't say anything about the mods right? Oh and drive it around for 30 minutes and leave it idle for like 20 minutes right before the test...eh?

Anyone know of a place that is relatively laid back on this type of stuff? I'm just afraid I'm not gonna pass because of the visual and then I'll have to spend more money to fix it then do it again then blah blah blah...

I'm in San Diego (Pacific Beach) so suggestions there would be best but I'm willing to travel as far north as LA. Any other thoughts, suggestions, experiences, words of encouragement or WHATEVER would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

From my experience, the only visual mod that is going to get you is your K&N air filter. Put your stock box back on and you're good to go. Virtually no shop will pass you with the K&N cone filter you have installed.

As for you y-pipe, every shop I've been too is way too lazy to get on their knees and peek at the exhaust. Never ever happened in all my years. PM me if you want the name of one of the lazy shops, but be prepared to drive to Murrieta. If I was you, I'd put your stock intake back on, grab a Pass or don't pay coupon from the PennySaver, and try a couple local places first.

ok, im looking into buying a stock intake right now. i left my old one back in Maryland (stupid of me) and my mom probably threw it away not knowing what it was lol. or even if she didnt i would have a hard time trying to explain to her what i want her to send to me and why lol, so im not gonna go thru with that.

is there a generic pass or don't pay coupon? i was looking on pennysaverusa.com and didnt see many pass or don't pays but did see one for jefferson smog in murietta. know anything about these guys? i might be willing to drive all the way up there if need be. let me know of some other places. my girl lives in escondido so im there sometimes and from there its only a half hour or so away. perfect for warming up the car.

LOL. Of all the smog shops in Murrieta/Temecula, you pick the one that will most likely catch your ypipe. Don't go to Jefferson Smog. I'll PM you a few good places to go to.

Don't you get a Penny Saver delivered to your residence every week? Pass or don't pay coupons for specific shops are in there all the time.

VanHowie- Rule #1 Never go to a smog station at a gas station. They don't like modified cars.

There are a lot of independent smog check places in San Diego which offer the "don't pass, don't pay". I recommend taking your car to a Vietnamese shop. They usually don't care about the visual mods on our car as long as the car passes smog. I've been taking my car to:

V & T Smog Test Only
9545 Kearny Villa Road
San Diego, CA 92126
(858) 695-3645

It's located in the Mira Mesa/Miramar area. Originally I took my 240sx there, and it was having engine issues which wouldn't pass smog. He owner of the shop (old Vietnamese guy) would tell me exactly what is wrong with the car so I could take it to a mechanic to get it fixed before I smoged it again. Hope this helps a little.

lol bump.
Just looking to see if anyone know any chill smog places in LA area. I MIGHT have a little bit of trouble passing, so if anyone can point me to "special" smog shops I would really appreciate it!

And also, I always see a 2nd gen and 5.5th gen park back to back EVERY single day in Pasadena. What's up with that?

I took my car here last time too. Pretty nice people here. My car didn't pass on the first run and the mechanic said my car might just need to warm up longer, so he left my car running for a few minutes, ran it again, and my car passed. I think they also allow you to come back for a free second test if your car doesn't pass the first time. I also have a budget y-pipe and I don't think they checked.

There was another Vietnamese shop along Miramar rd somewhere half way between the 15 and 805, I don't remember the name of the shop, but a while back they passed my Altima even with the check engine light on, although it probably helps that I'm Vietnamese too.

Unlikely. Put your OEM cat back on, and you'll have a good chance.

The last time I got my I30 smogged, the guy charged me $150 to diregard my intake. The alternative was $250 for him to replace the intake (why would I want a stock intake?).

That was in San Bernardino

it's just a scheme for the shop to make a quick $150.

Can't pass smog due to CEL?

I've taken it to this shop who won't pass smog even after 2nd attempt because they say that the computer knows the CEL is on and won't pass it because of that reason. The code is P1335. All other emission values show passing except for the stupid MIL. Anyone can PM some recommendations? I'm in the Inland Empire. Thanks.

I don't have the FSM or Haynes in front of me atm. What is P1335 anyway?

Crankshaft Position Sensor - Ref. I found two of the service bulletins that address this code. The car runs perfectly so I think it has something to do with the electrical wiring or something. I'm having trouble opening up the area where the ECM connector connects to the ECCS harness at this point and I feel like giving up and just going to the stealership.
