I'm in the market for a scan tool but sadly I really don't know anything about them. Is there anything I should look out for when buying one? Any specific brand? How will I benefit from having it?
Or, depending on what you want to do with it, you can grab a OBDII to USB adapter/scanner. You can read codes, data log some things, etc. IIRC, i paid about $30.

I dont even need autozone to get codes since I can do the pedal dance with the 3.5. I just want to use it on other people's cars or to change settings in the ECU. What tool do I need to use to change ECU settings? Like all that cool stuff that can be done. Like change timing, etc. ?

Nissan uses a consult II. I dont know where to get it and how much it would cost. I dont even know if it works on other type of cars. Also I think COBB tuning has something similar to that.

For that you would need a CONSULT-II, or a computer and software designed to emulate it, for lack of a better word.

The CONSULT-II is Nissan proprietary (won't work on anything but Nissan/Infiniti vehicles), and they're restricted; only Nissan/Infiniti dealerships are supposed to have them, but a few have gotten out there.

Ok. Cool guys that's exactly what I was looking for! I couldn't remember the name. Consult-II. I didn't plan on using it on anything non-nissan. Just max, Z's, and G's since that's the only type of car I work on for family members and friends. What are these consult thingamajigs I'm seeing on ebay for like $15?

Can you post a link? The only things I see are CONSULT cables, which again would require a computer and appropriate software.
Mind you if you get a CONSULT cable, you won't be able to do anything with the Z33/V35/A33B as you'd like; the CONSULT port was lost with the 4th gens (in that era).
Now, you use the OBD-II DLC with the CONSULT-II (or Cipher, Osiris, etc). If you don't plan on doing legacy work, then don't get the CONSULT cables on eBay. You can't use a generic adapter with Cipher, either; been there, tried that.

I have an Actron OBDII scanner that I will be selling. I got another one that you can hook up to older applications too, so I don't need it any more. I forget the model, but I can lookin into it if you want. I want $50 for it if you are interested.
Also, just to clarify this is just a jeneric OBDII scanner just like what they would use at Autozone or Advanced, this is not ConsultII or anything like that.
mine looks like this one, but I forget if its the exact same model
Majestic, If you have the money to spend on something like this, you minus well get something that does everything you want and more. I am def. interested in picking one up myself. If you find one that is a reasonable price, please post up your findings.

I bought one of these a while ago but didnt know where to plug it up so I took it back.
hahahha...please tell me you are kidding. I am pretty sure your car is a 97, so its under the dash. If you are sitting in the driver seat then its under the area where your left knee is pointing.
The 1995 is the only one that a little bit of a pain, it behind the radio console, just infront of the ecu, on the passenger side.
In 1996 the ODBII port location was standardized to the area where yours is in your 97.
