Pics from our trip to Hatteras this week (will update throughout the week)

So we decided "hell, let's drive right into Tropical Storm Hannah" and headed off to Waves, NC (outer banks just north of Hatteras). Wind was about 50mph crosswinds for most of the trip down (lots of fun staying in your lane!). Rain was wicked downpour almost the entire way (saw at least 10 cars/SUVs in ditches along I-95 and I-64 who were going too fast, clearly). I pretty much drove "the" speed limit all the way down, which tells you how bad the weather was!

Then we get to the outer banks and the weather relents. Wind still there but the rain has stopped. Unfortunately, now there is 2.5 miles of flooded roads south of Nags Head. Park Rangers (it's a national park area) turned back all non-SUVs and even alot of the SUVs were turning around. It really wasn't that bad...no parts we went through were more than about 2 feet deep, though I did have the wheels over half submerged at a few areas. The Tahoe behind us made it halfway through and then turned around and bailed for some reason...

Did see three maxes (one modded) in line ahead of us, but all of them turned around before they got to the water...

Pics don't show how deep it really was, since there were about 8 SUVs in a row sloshing through it so I kind of had a "path" through the water in front of me for the most part. Was fun though. Whenever I went over abotu 15mph I was getting spray all the way over the roof. Had to do some serious hosing off once we got to the house. Salt water on black cars doesn't look too good! Wasn't anything too hardcore, but driving through water is always fun and makes for good pics I think...

The riding croo...

through the water...this went on for about 2 1/2 miles and on the sides of the road was up to 4' deep (a jacked-up F250 showed us how deep it was, wish I had taken a pic. His 36's were completely underwater!)

Wish I could have taken this shot in a deeper area, but then I would have had a very wet camera, and those don't work very well!

keep in mind that the ocean is about 100 feet to the left of this pic (with 10-foot waves crashing on the beach) and the back bay is about 20 feet to the right of this pic (with 3-4 foot seas). very narrow, you feel like if a big wave comes over the dunes you're gonna be completely fuxor'd...

The local rescue squad had their "recovery vehicle" there to pull out people who got "in too deep" (no pun intended)

We always stop at this old Coast Guard station along the way down near the Inlet. Every year it's different due to the shifting dunes. 5 years back it was almost entirely covered with sand. Then 2 years ago there was hardly any sand around it. Now it's up to the 2nd story on most of it. Kind of spooky, I'd love to get inside and look around!

There is actually an 8' chain-link fence all the way around it with "keep out" signs, which is completely buried right now. I almost tripped walking over the barbed wire on top a few years back, lol.

sand was cool...wish I had a better camera to take "artsy" pics with..

at the place...more pics to come later for anyone who cares.

That's Route 12 right? We went down to Avon, NC in early August and apart from tunnel traffic it was a very good drive and an even better week on the beach. Those three Maximas were smart to turn back if the water was "cleaning" the undercarriages of all those SUVs...the Maximas would've been drowning!

yep, rt 12....it's the only road that goes down the banks. When I took my cargo out of the car-top box (all of it in plastic bags because of leakage) it turned out that the only water in there was salt water, sprayed up into the box from below...that's how high the water was spraying, lol..

btw, where in Burke are you and what does your max look like (if I haven't asked before)?

I live off Andromeda (off Shiplett, past the Shoppers). Here's a relatively recent picture of her

This was back when my next door neighboor had what I called my car's younger, uglier sister (it was a '91 SE 5 Speed...shame he let it fall into disrepair and eventually junked it)

EDIT: Oh yeah, my car's the one on the right in the picture.

from what I read on the Jeep forums, people who do donuts out on the beaches in the OBX:

1. get a hefty fine
2. get kicked off the beach by the park police
3. get their asses kicked by all the locals (one of the local jeepers climbed a dune in his jeep (a huge no-no), and about 10 local SUVs chased him back to his hotel and roughed him up pretty good)

It's a big deal to "behave yourself" on the OBX beaches, because there is a huge fight underway in the county and state legislatures as some groups (environmentalists) are trying to close all the beaches to ORVs, and when people do stupid **** out there, it adds ammo to their claim that the "beaches are being destroyed." So all the beach fishermen (who drive there in their trucks), surfers, and ORV clubs are all on the lookout for people doing dumb ****...

While we were out there everyone was doing the max 15mph speed limit (not posted, but generally known), and there are alot of beach sections fenced off because of sea turtle breeding areas and other wildlife areas.

You are correct, sir! It's a HUGE deal to those that love to drive out there and surf, lay on the beach or just to hang out with friends. Stupid people messing up the dunes and beach = ftl.
