Mandatory car inspection in Illinois?

Going to move to Chicago sometime this spring and wondering if there is mandatory car inspection to register the car? In NJ the inspection is every 2 years, but I couldn't find any info on the Illinois DMV site regarding this issue.

I did find that first time registration requires a smog check and every 2 years thereafter, so the inspection is only for smog? Tint and other stuff don't matter? (In NJ tint, fail smog, aftermarket lighting...etc will fail inspection automatically)

IL doesn't have inspection. We have smog check every 2 years, however a CEL will be an automatic fail.

Tint is not legal in the front 2 windows at all. I would suggest removing it. Cops usually ticket as a parking violation for tint. The fee for that is going up starting today. It was $25, now it is $250.

Thanks and I assume the smog check can be done at independent locations? I mean if I go to the DMV with tint on my window I assume they will fail me for it?

Smog test are done at independent locations. Tint doesn't affect smog checks. Just take the tint off to avoid a $250 ticket.

Another thing, the DMV will not allow anyone to take a driving test with a car that is tinted in the front 2 windows. FYI for when you apply for an IL license.

1. the emission test is now being done every time you renew your plates, and only on OBDII cars.
2. there is NO independent test center for emission testing, they are ALL government owned (1.5 ton or heavier trucks are different).
3. As of current we have NO safety inspection of any sort

illinois is very logical when it comes to emission testing, as long as the car meets it's original requirements (no codes) then you pass. It doesn't matter if you did a twin turbo V12 motor swap, as long as the computer says everything is within spec, you are good to go.
