Just a couple of suggestions since Ive had a few friends walk out of tire shops with scratched, pitted, or damaged wheels. I personally have had this happen twice, and have never had a hard time getting the shop to refinish or replace the wheel.
When you go in, WASH YOUR WHEELS, make them spotless.
I had a previous scratch, and i marked it with a random colored crayon.
With the service writer, Demand a walk around to look at the wheels and point out that they are flawless, and show him the damadge already there. Make it a point to note it on the work order about the condition of the wheels, and how many scratches are marked with the crayon.
After that 2 min process, they really cant say anything to deny what happend. Its all in writing, and it helps that the service writer now knows that your on point about everything.

Very good advice. I usually just go into the bay and stand there watching them while they do it. Fortuanately a couple guys at my local tire shop are extremely careful so I've been really happy...
