help me decide,toyo proxys 4 or pirelli pzero nero m+s

It might come down to a coin toss. The Toyos aren't rated by tirerack as they don't carry them and the pirelli pzero nero are top rated. What is the cost differential and relative life expectancy?

Do you have snow tires or do you intend to run these year round? Neither one are particularly good in snow.

If you have snow tires, have you considered a summer tire rather than an all-season tire.

If you don't run snow tires, and snow isn't problematic where you live, it may come down to wanting to save the $26 with the Toyos.

What tire will provide the longer life span - you didn't answer that question.

The Pirellis have a UTQG rating of 400 vs 300 for the Toyos so I suspect the Pirellis well last longer all things being equal. I saw a set on a friends brand new Mustang GT recently and they're a good-looking tire. The Pirellis also retail for about $25 more per tire than the Toyos, so I'm inclined to say go for the Pirellis and forget the $26 savings that come with the Toyos.

I'm having a tough time picking tires for my wife's O2 Maxima, with stock 17" x 7" rims. I've gotten some good prices on both of these tires and had picked the Pirellis in a 235/45/17 which almost every tire store I've talked to in Dallas say's will fit fine, but had to back out of the Pirellis deal when I read many places that the tires wore out extremely quickly. Several people had worn them out in less than 15K-20K miles and loved them except for the short tread life. I don't know why I'm finding this when Tire rack say's I should get close to 40K with regular rotations. This is really confusing me.

Pirellis traditionally perform beautifully because of a softer compound but wear out faster. Their wear rating of 400 is based on Pirelli comparisons to their other Pirelli tires, not compared to other tire brands. I'd go with Toyos. Probably a bit cheaper and I'm confident they will last longer.

Thanks Doc, for the tip. I talked to Toyo yesterday, and they have a TPT that's warranted for 65K mi. tread life by Toyo. Looks like I might get someone to order this tire for me. Got best price of $118 for 235/45/17 today from NTB on this. Discount tire was $154 for same tire. Wow! Thought D/T would beat any price but NOT! Now to find out why all the confusion on what tire will fit the stock rim. Guy at NTB showed me their fitment guide (really thick book) that's put out by the tire companies. It say's this is a plus size 0 upgrade, and fits fine on our 7" rim. Every shop in Dallas has told me same thing. He even called Tire Rack guy and discussed this on the speaker ph. while I was standing there, and it's confusing to even them. This larger size gives more choices for sure. Not sure if you can get either size in the tire you want, if there's any reason to go for the wider tire other than looks. It would be easier to find on the road in middle of no where as the 235 is a popular size. Not so with the 225/50/17.

What do you think the M&S stand for?
I have the Pirelli's. They are magnificent. I have run them in snow and slush and they felt good. They performed very well. I was very at ease with them. You would be very pleased with them. I don't remember which mag but the mag rated the 7 best tires and the Pirelli's were on there.

Epacy, How are your Pirelli P Zero Nero M+S tires wearing? How many miles have you had them? I've read many good reviews, but many complain of "You can almost hear the tread wearing while you drive". I was sold until I started reading many of these complaints. What's your real world Maxima experience with this?

For those going with Toyo Proxes TPT, another consideration is the Yokohama Avid in either the H or V rating. I believe they are a better tire than the TPT, at least thats what tire shops tell me that sell both. Tirerack doesn't carry Toyo.

I finally decided to go with the Toyo Proxes 4. Read several places of this tire having excellent grip and extremely good tread wear. I ordered the 235/45/17 after having so many tire guys that deal with these everyday, show me their guide book that say's they will fit the factory rim with no problem, and their personal experience showed same results. Hopefully the tread wear will prove to be long wearing as reported several places.
