245/40-17 vs 235/45-17 on 5th gen
I've been browsing around looking at tires and the 245/40-17 is catching my eye. I know that it is a pretty good percentage off from stock or is it? Most auto manufactures just upsize their tire and wheel packages for different models in the same line. That way they do not have to calibrate models differently. Now we come to the Maxima. The 2k2-2k3 GXE comes stock with 215/55-16's and the GLE / SE come with 225/50-17's.
GXE
Sidewall: 4.7"
Diameter: 25.3
SE/GLE
Sidewall: 4.4"
Diameter: 25.9
The stock diameters are off my .6
GXE vs 245/40-17: off by .6 and 2.3% too fast
SE/GLE vs " " " : off by .12 and 4.4% too fast
Just to compare the normal 17" upgrade of 235/45-17
GXE: off by .9 and 3.6% too fast
SE/GLE: off by .6 and 2.1% too fast
So what gives? Does Nissan calibrate the GXE different than the GLE / SE? Or is one of the cars speedo actually off?
If all modles are calibrated correctly, any info that tells someone to go with a 235/45-17 for a GXE is wrong. They should go with the 245/40-17.
Hope you can understand the mess.

I was doing some of the stuff you've done here. But I thought 235/45/17 is the closest to 215/55/16 for GXE(2k2+)/SE(2k1- w/o sport) and 245/45/17 is the closest to 225/50/17.
I personally don't think Nissan does any kind of special calibration for each tire size. I think they accept 2 to 3% error as acceptable margin of error.

I think otherwise. I think that Nissan calibrated the SE and GXE/GLE differently.
Are you looking to replace the OE Potenze RE92, or are you getting a new set of wheels to go with the tires? 245/40/17 is wayyy too wide for a 7" wide wheels and the sidewall is too thin. Not to mention your speedo will be off.

I am planning on getting 245/40/17 on 17x8 with a 35 mm offset and I am worried about rubbing. My car is lowered 1.7 inch in front and 1.5 in rear with progress springs. I don't care about the speedo as these will be autocross only tires.
*EDIT* I just noticed you are a fifth gen and I am a fourth gen so it will be different.
