very loud tires
I just got some used 17' wheels with 235/45 tires on them and they are loud as hell. At highway speeds the noise is almost unbarable, they are bridgestone potenza 71's and the fronts have about 50% wear while the rears have only about 20% left on them. They arent balanced very well either, does anyone have an idea to why they may be so loud? IE tire pressure etc...

uneven tread wear... out of balance... and some tires are just loud, especially after some wear. i had kuhmo's and just replaced them with a set of dunlop sp sport 5000's. i had no idea how loud the kuhmos actually were until these tires. there's not much you can do if they are as loud as you say except for replace them. but check your air pressure... i noticed when i dropped mine from 38psi to 32psi they got a little quieter. good luck.

RE71s are loud by nature. You should change the tires to a different model. If you want a summer sport tire that is quiet, expect to pay a lot.
I've read good things about the Continental Extreme Contact all season high performance tire that is priced very well.

My Sport A2's were quiet at first, but are now unacceptably loud after only 12K miles. Im thinking about trashing them and going to an all-season; but judging from the comments at this forum, I think the Maxima has a major problem with noise isolation by design.

If they're used tires, who knows what may be wrong with them. They could just be out of balance, but could also be flat spotted (either from skidding or just sitting around too long - some tires do this), or be out of round, which can happen with age. The RE71's are discontinued AFAIK, so who knows how old they are. For noise, some tires are just plain noisy and some tires also get louder with age too.
Lots of tire suggestions above, but keep in mind that some are all seasons, and others are summer tires. If performance matters more to you, use summer tires (like your RE71's) if you can.

Funny I dont remember tire noise being an issue with my past cars (93 Altima most recently). We used to rag a buddy of mine with a 97 max SE that it sounded like he had mud bogging tires on, now Im in the same boat with my 96 GLE! Yes, I think Im going to try all-season "passenger" tires next for two reasons; 1) the wimpy tread pattern should be quieter, and 2) the squishy sidewalls should help counter the harsh ride from my AGX shocks, which are way to stiff for this old man...but thats a whole 'nother thread!

eww... 712's... sorry to say i hated those tires... loud, traction dry and wet was just "ok"... and at the track they were garbage. i was running 2.3-2.45 60fts consistently with those tires.... switched to dunlop sp5000's... running consistant 2.22 60fts with no other changes. and the sp 5000's are one of the quietest tires i've owned, handle corners almost like my old sp8000's... and i will likely get 35k out of them... oh, the 5000's are an all season tire.
