Dynomax VT muffler (review)

Dynomax VT muffler (review)
Today I installed the Dynomax VT muffler 17157. I previously had the Dynomax superturbo 3" inlets.
The VT is rated to 800+ CFM while the superturbo is rated at about ~400. The VT is a straight throw design just like the UltraFlo which supports above 1kwhp.
For those not familiar with the VT: http://www.dynomax.com/mufflers.php?muffler=vt
Once the car is warm at idle it is very very quiet, no drone at all. As soon as you give it gas it gets a little loud till you reach your cruising speed then it becomes extremely quiet. Cruising at 40 or any speed for that matter its like stock, road noise is actually louder than the exhaust when cruising. For reference my entire exhaust system consist of just the muffler and the turbo, no resonator, no cat, nothing. Once you step on it, it gets loud, this thing flows like crazy, I get more boost and power (same effect as i got when i took off the muffler and ran with open dump). Overall I like it, I am wondering if I should have bought the 4.0L+ version, since any little acceleration you can hear it open up, but maybe the 4.0+ might be hard to open and cause too much backpressure.
So in comparison between VT and Superturbo, at idle and cruising the VT is alot more quiet, any acceleration and the VT gets louder than the superturbo, and ofcourse at WOT the VT clearly outperforms.

Interesting. So basically, the flap opens with the exhaust flow right? Meaning the 4.0L version will just have more resistance compared to the one you got. This sounds like a good alternative to a cut out.

Exactly, I really like it. Now I no longer need to figure out what to do when I go to the track. I had a bandclamp for quick disconnect of the other muffler for when I wanted to run open dump, but now no need =)

I've come to the conclusion that you are one lazy **** streetz...
Automatic transmission, automatic timing retard, and now automatic exhaust cut out. I wonder whats next. Soon you wont even have to get in your car to drive it. lmao.

Interesting, do you have any vids of it in action? I'm running a 3" e-cutout off the downpipe and downpipe back is 2.5" to a 2.5" super turbo muffler. Its quiet with the cutout closed but I lose about 35whp lol

Yeah man the superturbo is very quiet but performance wise it really sucks. I have videos, ill upload it soon.

After doing some reading, I am going to be ordering the 4.0L+ version of this muffler. The evo guys tested both of them and the smaller displacement version opens to easily even on their 2.#L cars. Hopefully with the 4L version driving around will be alot more quiet, it should be.

i know it's not the same as under load (and you might be waiting on the 4.0L+ model) but even just a sound clip from like 10-15ft away with idle, mild rev, and a big rev would suffice for now till you can find someone to stand on the side of the road with a camera. You could always find a empty parking lot and just set the camera on the ground...

Yeah i like cutouts, however on my setup you dont really hear the turbo with the cutout, the exhaust sound overpowers the very loud hx40 whistle. And this muffler is cheaper than a cutout lol

I got the 4.0L+ version today, installed it. I like it more, dosnt open at easily which means it dosent flap and make noise at idle, the other one was doing that. Was getting annoying, you can hear it opening and close with the exhaust pulses. Something kind of cool is that as the valve is opening, the exhaust sound like a WRX lol, or like when you have a cylinder not firing, once its fully open its just loud. If anyone is going to get this, id recommend the 4.0L+ version, which is the 17957.

Argh!!!! lol ill make it just for you
After testing both versions of the muffler, i have come to the conclusion that it really isnt quieter than the Superturbo. At idle and city driving its basically the same, hard to tell the difference in my opinion. However once you reach your cruising speed it is completely quiet. So if you want very quiet and you do alot of city driving I dont think this is for you. If you want the power and flow then the VT it is.

Magnaflow? Im pretty sure a magnaflow is much louder. Thats the first muffler i ever had and sounded so bad and annoying. In my opinion this by far better and more quiet.

Had one of these installed today and I must say Im quite impressed.
To me, at idle it sounds the same as the super turbo, and when cruising may even be quiter. Even at WOT its not too bad, nothing like my cutout setup was.
Im very happy with it so far, thanks streetz for recommending this muffler.
