4.5gen backyard turbo build
Well I was planning to make this thread when I was alittle farer along but I am snowed in and bored.
I have a 97 gle with a 5-speed swap and 3.5swap. I have been spraying for sometime but havn't lately cause trannies are rare in these parts. I rode in a fellow org members turbo 4gen and loved it. The power comes in soo much smoother and feel tranny friendly. I will be making everything and trying to keep the piping short and straight as possible while still using the stock rad, a/c and fans. All suggestions/opinions are welcome. Looking to make about 400fwhp
So here is the setup:
custom forward feedpipe with the turbo behind the headlight
notched front motor mount
3inch downpipe into 3inch exhaust
same side intercooler
tial 44mm wastegate with a 10lb spring
hks bov
dw 600cc injectors
masterpower T61/P-Trim

custom jwt ecu, with a 7200 rev limit and 10 additional degree's of timing
vafc2 for fine tuning

This was just a pipe I made to connect the feedpipe directly to the exhaust so I could continue to the drive the car n/a while I finish the build

Looks like your coming along good bro... Should have crazy quick spool... What's the specs on the turbo's your looking at? I've been hearing some **** about master power turbo's. Supra guys have been running them like cray.
I just ordered a Master Power t70... Look into them... And post 4 it looks like the pipe is suspended in mid air by no string or contact...floating feed pipe for the winner.. lol

^ thanks and yes boost feels soo much better. The purpose for the piping was to have quick spools even with a larger turbo so my dyno graph will look somewhat like a nitrous graph but without the power drop at higher rpms

I think the .63 is too small and I will just smoke the tires everytime I hit the gas but will call masterpower and see if I can get the gt35r with a bigger exhaust housing if not it's going to be the t-70

these are the spec's on the t-61, I felt for my driving style the exhaust housing was too big and would buy it if I can get it with a .84 exhaust
Since all of these turbo's will support my hp goals it's just a matter of picking one that spools the way I want

these are the spec's on the t-61, I felt for my driving style the exhaust housing was too big and would buy it if I can get it with a .84 exhaust

I knew people would hate on the jwt ecu and I know about their issues with timing and requested a addition 10degree's over their standard turbo tune. A choose to go with them cause I can not have cel in my state and pass emissions and to my knowledge this can not be avioded with a em or eb.
As for the synapse, please let me know what's wrong with them. I do not know anyone personally that owns one and going by what I read online

I would just go for a tried and true Tial. I wouldn't mess around with a wastegate. It's pretty much the only thing that is keeping your car from boosting out of control lol.
Other than that the build looks pretty good.

Synapse gates looked really good and had a big following when they first came out, and then there was a huge thread on honda-tech about guys having problems, and Synapse actually came on there and was basically talking **** to people who were questioning them and acting in a totally unprofessional manner. It was a real **** storm. My buddy has one on his turbo maxima and he can shed more light on this, but long story short he wants to go back to tial and puts tials on all his builds now (he's my turbo fab guy) after a short stint of using synapses on builds.
Get a tial MV-S. that's the new one that is way smaller than the others and comes with V-bands instead of bolt on flanges. far superior.
About the JWT ECU, I don't know about EU or EB and check engine lights. My car has no emissions and my state has no emissions so I've never worried about nor learned about whether or not it can be installed without a CEL.

i think a t4 p trim .58 or .69 tangental will not be too small.. supra guys make well over 400 with a .58 housing, I have seent 2 gt 35s with a .58 housing make over 1200 whp ona tt supra, but the trick is getting a good flowing wheel. I wouldnt use anything bigger than .69 myself, have had both .58 and .69, love the way boost came in with the .58. and in no way did it choke up top, and realistically, a gt35 or t70 will like alot more boost than you will be able to put into it without an unbuilt engine.. The feedpipe looks great, wouldnt it be cool to get a v band fed turbo?? i know they are some outhere, please keep up posted with the pics, i want to boost again but i dont want to move my battery, so im curious to see how this goes for you.

it looks like it will be either .63 or .68
here are a few pic's from another org member placed his turbo low and did not move the battery. The told me that all he did put some of that heat reflective tape stuff on the battery tray and around the battery and the heat did no bother it. Also to remove the pump he had to move the turbo up about 2inches and has never had any oil drainage problems

Thanks for those pics,dont lke how he joined the banks and the piping size, but you say he didnt even have issues not running an oil pump? are you going to use a braket somewhere? keep us posted

sweet. what size did you make the piping feeding the turbo after joining both banks? the y looks good. did you use the y pipe you already had, shortened it and reversed it with and additional j bend?

z32 maf came in today and hopefully install the feedpipe this weekend and make a pipe to connect it to the exhaust.
Next week my ecu is off to jwt for a reflash, hope it comes back before maxus

when ur installing u'll see that suprisingly enough there is a **** load of space there, my forward y pipe is completely 2.5" and couldve of went 2.75" and still cleared the mount with some modificaton to radiator fan shroud....
Did you get them to go more aggressive with the timing? if so can you shoot me a ballpark of their quote to u via pm? thanks man...

Yes like I stated in the post above, I requested a additional 10degree's of timing. I already had a jwt ecu setup for n/a so it only cost 100.00 for the reflash
As for the piping when took the amount of exhaust cfm's a 3.5 would produce at 7000rpms and measure the lenght and diameter of the feedpipe it was more then enough to support the engine and did not show nesscary to use bigger piping. Plus the smaller diameter helps to spool the turbo faster
