350z exhaust manifolds

I've been thinking about going turbo and i've researched a couple of turbo set-ups and it seems everyone uses the y-pipe set up. It dawned on me and I've researched but havent found anything on possibly using the 350z exhaust manifolds or aftermarket headers as turbo manifolds for a turbo set for the FWD VQ35. Is that possible?

I figure that if the ports on the heads match, we would be able to.. it would eliminate the reverse y-pipe set-up. Anybody try this or anybody have any experianced analogy on this??

I was exploring this option before. I feel it can be done. assuming that the manifolds point straight out or you could cut it where they all meet, and add additional piping and meet each bank into one collector.

the issues is running those hot piping around the bay, by coolant pipes, and various wires. I feel this is alone the same lines as the VQ30DET manifold. I feel it can be done with careful planning, routing, and proper heat management. The only thing is aftermarket Z manifolds are more expensive than having your own custom forward Y made, but it would be more efficient. If you can pick up a set of stock Z manifold for cheap its worth a shot.

to help with some visuals

i believe those are stock vs nismo headers

a set like these could be promising

but the amount of space is more of an issue since the Z headers needs more space horizontally than we have in our bays.

I've actually come across quite a bit of Ebay headers, but I really dont know if there's any fitment issues.. I gotta do the research.

There's a few that I found under 150.00
Here's one of them:

not bad. I would email them and see if they can measure the length of the header from tip to tip. then take that measurement and go under your hood and see where it stops. I imagine they may be a bit too long and might run you into some hard lines that you wont want to mess with. If it stops with decent space then you might be onto something.

For those you have posted looks like you can chop maybe 6" off the end, put a 90 bend (well for the bank closest to the firewall) then route it forward. the bank closest to the front of the car I believe should have more than enough room (especially if you move the battery).

if this setup can work. it will eliminate the need for a forward Y setup, and leave room for a down pipe to be routed thru the same passage that the Y Pipe

edit: now that I think about it. the bank closest to the front of the car, those headers will smash into the fans. unless you go a custom route with the fans I think it wont fit... but I'm just eye ballin it

I actually tried fitment on the Greddy TT manifolds on my car, but in order to have the wastegate ports in the right direction, and to get okay clearance you have to flip the manifolds over - doesn't quite fit (at least not on my VQ30, but since the heads on the VQs are different lengths I imagine you can't do that).

Z manifold, unless you try to flip it, it will hit the motor mounts.

maybe those with the vq35 swap could make it work? possibly... I'll see if I can get my hands on some manifold or something and test them out...

I'm thinking that the firewall side Manifold would get in the way of the steering rack. I have toyed with this Idea before, there just isn't enough room down there to play around.

Would the VQ30det manifolds fit over the gearbox and mount the turbo at the front of the engine bay? Or do engine mounts get in the way?

If that was the only issue, surely you can fab up a new one easy enough?

they will bolt up, what they will run into is a different story. probably some custom modification will need to be done. many thought those hot pipes going around the side of the motor (driver side) is good plus many lines are int he way that would get over heated. I still stand by my statement that with proper coating/wrapping and heatshields where needed it could be the most efficient setup.
