Recently purchased GSS342 for my '89 Maxima. I downloaded instructions for a 4th gen and they didn't really help, but the swap was straight forward.
My problem is that the pump just simply did NOT go in soundly like I thought it would. I had to twist it around kinda funky to get the pickup filter to stick out straight in the stock position. I also had to cut away at the plug and drill holes into the male clips so I could secure my factory pump +/- wires. The rubber bumper that goes at the bottom didn't fit right. All in all, I'd say the fuel hose at the top is all that's holding it in place. I feel it will vibrate off the bottom rubber bumper.
It also sounds much more harsh/groaning when it is pumping....normal?
wtf? Did you try to use the strainer (the filter thing at the inlet of the pump) that comes with the pump? Because you're supposed to reuse your stock one.
The only thing you use from whats in the box of the pump is the pump itself. And everything should have just bolted/ plugged right up.
I just installed my 255 this sunday and everything was plug and play.
EDIT- I just noticed this was a 3rd gen, sorry about that. Not sure how much of the 4th gen writeup would actually apply to you then
My Walbro buzzes if you run it for a while, but under normal conditions you can't hear it.

The 3rd gen uses the GSS341 and needs an install kit. The 4th gen uses the GSS342 and plugs right in.
Can you get away with using a GSS342? Probably, but if you are having problems, it is because you are using the wrong part.
I did install just the pump, that's all I purchased. I may have got turned around on the threads I read, understanding that no install kit was needed for 3rd gen. Either way, I'm not having problems. Just didn't seem to go in right. Makes since though, probably got the wrong part number. I understood that really the only differences between 341 and 342 were were the pick up opening at the bottom was in reference to the outlet at the top of the pump. Explains why I had to twist the pump funky.
Anyone have images of the install kit to determine if it's worth getting and taking everything apart again? Much appreciation for the input!
Yes, please either post them or email them to me. Now, I checked out one website yesterday that had an image of an install kit. All it seemed to consist of is a wire plug with two wires sticking out, a new rubber bumper for the bottom of the pump, fuel screen, and new fuel hose. The only thing out of all that I believe could have been helpful is the fuel hose, if it is longer than stock. That would have allowed the pump to drop down a bit further and perhaps fit more snug against the bottom bumper and metal support.
I've been told to just use the stock fuel screen, my fuel hose looked brand new, and I think it was easier to cut at the pump's plug and attach my stock wires rather than cutting my stock wires and attaching the walbro plug/wires. Eh, maybe it's just one of those things. Does cause me to think that if my pump is now sitting even a 1/4" higher in the tank, that I will "run out of gas" a bit sooner.
