My car tried to kick my **** today....

This is sort of boost related....mods feel free to move if you wish....

As everyone knows I made custom 3" piping for the S/C recently to get he Z32 MAF to work correctly. One of the things I bought was a MAF Adapter like you see on EBay - one of those black plastic ones. Today I was in the Sears parking lot (some of you old timers know how I shouldn't play around with my car in Sears parking lots after last time when I broke my oil feed line). and thought the MEVI wasn't activating.

So I popped the hood and revved the engine to 5k RPM (it was well warmed up) to watch if the VI opened. As soon as I did this since the piping didn't have the hood holding it in place anymore.....the plastic MAF Adapter broke on ALL 4 bolts and the pipe flew up and smacked me in my face. Not enough to injure me (because I'm sure you care) but enough to scare the crap outta me! Fortunately I had a spare air filter in the trunk (The Z32 MAF will not run with no air filter on it) and ran Naturally Aspirated all the way home.

Word to the wise - using sub par parts on your Maxima will get your *** kicked by your Maxima.

Ordering an aluminim milled Adapter this week from Frankencar.

Im sorry but that was too funny, hope your okay. I had one of those plastic MAF adapters and noticed at it cracked one side so 2 bolts were holding it on. The plastic one was a waste so an expensive metal/aluminum will be worth it. I might try to make my own or Ill just buy one. I dont know if Frankencar has the same service as before but ordering from them will take forever.

Wow that's weird, glad you and your car are OK. I don't understand how having the hood open caused your maf adaptor to break? Also I don't understand why the Z32 maf won't work without a filter?

It's totally funny - that's why I posted it.

Nealoc-

The Z32 MAF doesn't work on a 300zx without a filter - or on my car N/A without a filter. Idles horribly and stutters. If you know anyone what has a Z or Max with one - try removing the filter and you'll see what I mean - that thing is just VERY tempermental compared to the A32.

The piping is sort of free-hanging right now and I have the blower clocked upward. That means the hood holds the pipe in place. With the hood up the sudden shock of compressed air caused the MAF Adapter to break so that end of the piping flew up at me.

Next time I work on my car I'm wearing my DOT race helmet.

But if you have the MAF on the charged side, like me and Neal do, a filter won't matter.

Good story!

nono - you don't understand.

MAF IS on the charged side but when the adapter broke it wouldn't hold the piping on anymore. So I had a 300zx filter in the trunk and screwed that on to the MAF and ran N/A all the way home. My S/C piping went in the back seat.

Without that filter I wouldn't have made it home since the car won't run N/A without a filter on it. The S/C makes quite a noise without it being hooked up to anything. People next to me were giving me odd looks.

If you read the top sticky on this forum you'll see my trials and tribulations with the Z32 AMF on the charged side and how I fixed it. Part of that was testing it on a Z and the Z's MAF on my car - and that's how I know a Z idles like crap also without a filter on the MAF.

Car is not running boost until I get a new MAF adapter - getitng a billet aluminum one this time.

Does the filter smooth out the airflow or something? I've got 300zx maf but I've never tried to start the car without my charge piping hooked to it.

Yep. Apparently it does somehow smooth the airflow.

ahahahaahahahahahahahahaa

Need to wear a helmet when you work on your car man...

I think I have an extra MAF adapter laying around, I'll check and let you know. Believe it or not, I actually saw some for sale at a local autozone, you might want to look there as well.

Haha - was waiting for you to come on and ridicule me.

I'm looking at the billet aluminum Frankencar one right now - may as well get the strongest one I can afford.

The ones you may have - are they billet or just cheap aluminum?

billet

cheap aluminum

Looks like you weren't the only one to get their a$$ kicked by their max. Tonight, I went to check a few things, I popped my hood, as I lean in to do what in need to, the hood struts decided to give way so the darn thing landed right on my head. Now I got a nice bump on the top of my head. Guess my car didn't wanna be bother tonight.

Hockey sticks don't give way. I've always used cut off hockey sticks in my cars for hood props.
