Just throwing this out there...

I've been looking into doing powder coating on top of paint services. I'm wondering if you guys think this is a good idea? And wondered if anyone in the SE section or the rest of the forum would be interested?

Of course Max.org members get a discount! Reason as to why I have been thinking of doing this is that I know powder coating lasts longer and such and you can do it on anything metal from various engine parts to wheels and anything in between. There are also a ton of colors to choose from, including candy colors. If something is taken down to bare metal it can even have an anodized look using transparent candy without the silver/chrome base.

Let me know what you think guys!

Would be interesting! I can think of a few parts I would get powder coated. Have you done any powder coating before or would this be your first times trying it? I'd like to see sampled of your abilites to know if and how much to get powder coated.

It's actually a pretty simple process, the hardest thing is that you need an oven to bake the the things in...I would like to get my brake calipers powdercoated a very metallic purple. And my wheels black. FO SHO.

very true but even something as easy as changing your brake calipers is a simple process but can still get messed up ( )

My perspective is just wanting to make sure the work will be quality before you spend money of getting various parts (important parts) powder coated.

True, they actually sell kits for like $40 that come with everything you need, minus the oven...you just paint the ______ then shove it in the oven and voila. I'm sure you have to take the normal steps to prep the item but should be fairly straightforward. Even something a woman could do.

ohh chit.... she's going to charge you double for that comment

$40 kit? wow...still you know there are cheap kits when they should be $400 kits.

but I'm sure if there enough interest Jess will get the tools and get her practice in and show the quality of her abilites. I just wouldnt want to be the early customer that is being practiced on and my parts dont turn out as expected.

Honestly I don't think the interest will be there, on the org atleast lol...No one around here except me seems to be into modding cars for looks...

it wont be on the org. but a service like powder coating is really a one maybe two time service. Powder coating (when done right) is supposed to be highly durable and last a long time, so once one person has all they want powder coated that it. So gather interest on here, IA, and I guess word of mouth would be what help this to be worth wild. She might get a good amount of interest at first but I guess more the she has her name out there and people know her services and prices, when people have something new they need powder coated they will call her.

Sadly your right rick, arent that many still interestin in modding for looks, or they have all they wanted to do done. Plus times are hard and people arent pouring money into their cars like they used to. Especially with the holidays coming up. I know I'm saving up...Black Friday is coming soon and I might want to get a few things.

I have not done PC'ing before, but I will practice on my own pieces before actually working on things for you guys. I will post up samples once done no worries!

Once I'm ready to do PC'ing I'll post prices + paint prices together.

It's simple yes, but if you don't get good coverage you will be able to see through the powder coat. Just like when you don't cover well enough with paint it doesn't look good @ all lol.

You have a choice between these purple colors -

Silver Base / Chrome Base + Candy Violet

Very true. I put out quality work and will show that before I start accepting work from you guys.

Where are you pricing your kits? Even the cheapo kit from Harbor Freight is $70. I'll be getting a better quality kit elsewhere since it covers better. You also have to figure in the oven + air compressor cost and even a sand blaster if needed. You have to strip down the items to bare metal if they're already painted. It's not very cheap which is why I wanted to gauge interest first before putting down $1k into this.

If it's so easy a woman could do it, then go cook ya own calipers foo'!

I agree it's like a one time thing with powder coating, but it's like some people powder coat things until they run out of things, or word of mouth to get business more than anything.

At the moment just starting small and doing stuff for friends. If it gets popular then more the merrier!

Okay I can do black but you will need to choose there's like 6 different blacks.

Satin Black - very low gloss
Flat Black - no gloss
High-Gloss Black - shiny
Mirror Black - super shiny
Wrinkle Black - self explanatory
Texture Black - self explanatory

Sounds good. I will post prices as soon as I get started!

Can do! Wheels would be tough, because the largest I can prob do is 18" wheels, but 18" is pushing it unless I can find a larger oven. Though I can always paint too.

I will need at the very MINIMUM about 5 people at first. Because it's going to be about $1k to just invest into getting it started. So I'll at least need to make that money back.

I can do headlight housings if they are metal. Plastic wouldn't survive in the oven for 20 mins @ 400F. LoL

Everyone realizes that they have to strip the calipers and remove the piston and gasket before powder coating. Love getting brake fluid all over me

not necessarily they are meant to handle temps higher than that of the oven that bakes the powder coating. But this is a good time to do that and replace seals and have basically a brand new set of calipers.

Yes basically you guys will have to remove calipers, and then need to remove all seals and pistons and do a rebuild after powder coating. It's just sooo much fun lol. I know some of the newer calipers are able to withstand the heat of 400F @ 20 mins. It's because when you're braking the heat dissipates and isn't sitting very long without air to cool it off. I'd like to see someone brake for 20mins straight...scary thought!

we'll since you put it that way....

I'm going to look up the process of rebuilding and practice on a spare set of calipers i have, so if we ende up powder coating at this meet, the calipers can get rebuilt and re-installed. People will leave with a new sexy shinny brakes and new brake fluid in the system

Good idea. I looked up how to rebuild, but I may just leave that part up to you guys and do only powder coating. Though the calipers still need to be sand blasted before painting. Lots of things I need to pick up before getting it started so I probably won't have it all by the time of the meet.
