So uh, I isolated the problem......(With Video)

So remember that whole power steering problem that came on suddenly yesterday in the Maxima?

Yeah well, this is what was happening every time I turned the wheel.

[It's Tinypic, so you'll need to click this link:]

Safe to say I could use a power steering hose. Lame thing is that you can't even see the hole at idle or when the car is off....it's only evident (and boy is it ever) when the line is pressurized.

My poor driveway.

I have to drive the car with it doing this to wherever has the part....Napa doesn't have it, Regal Nissan wants to charge like $225 (thanks but no thanks), and most of the salvage yards are closed now. Bah.

Inorite?! After I saw it I was like......errrr......well that explains the loss of fluid......

It must have just happened yesterday....I bet the puddles under my car were from me turning the wheel to get into the parking space, because when it's idling with the wheels set straight, you truly can't even tell there's such a gigantic leak aside from the fact that everything in that quarter of the engine bay is doused in fluid.

Which....that's enough to tip you off for sure..... ..... but the point is, it doesn't leak at all under those conditions.

wait not sure if my piece will work... mine is from a 6th gen but I broke where that line part goes..(got frustrated and didnt need it). so I'm not sure if they are compatible anyway...

that lines trails back to the PS pump and its detachable...but I dont know if anywhere (besides the dealership) sells it by it self. Why not give the dealer a call and see how much they charge, might be surprisingly cheaper than you'd expect. As long as its cheaper than a new PS pump then sounds like a good deal to me!

its both thats a PS pump but its from a 6th gen and when I looked at it I dont think it will work on your car but yea I was a little hyper that I might have the part, so my hand wasnt too steady and my 10mp camera is charging... so i have to use my BOLD! to snap the pic... I should get a better one but I'm not sure if it will work now that I've lowered my blood pressure and thought about it...

That's too much when I could find one at a salvage yard for like $100....it might be a little more of a drive, but meh.

funny enough in my research they seem to group the PS pump from 4g to 5th gen (up to 2k3) but thats odd cause I'm sure the assembly is not the same... damn with my friend with his 5.5th gen was around...

I need a pic of the 5.5th gen engine bay....

IIRC, I have a similar problem, and I used an old piece of radiator hose + silicone + two hose clamps to solve the problem temporarily until I can get the new hose installed. It leaks, but nowhere near as bad.

Of course, mine's also never spurted like that...it's been more of just a slow leak from the get-go.

did you replace the whole line? or the whole pump with new lines?

hers I think was done on purpose. her roomate was mad she didnt cook more rosemary chicken and use her keys and poked a hole in her power steering line....sad they would do that over some chicken...

I've got a whole new pressure hose waiting to go on. I just have to get the Max up on a lift. This was just a last-resort quick-fix until I can get the hose installed.

It's just about a 2" piece of radiator hose slit, slapped and sealed over the leaky spot (located pretty much exactly where hers is). I figure the hose is already ****ed, so it's not going to hurt it either way.

That and my driveway's on a slope, so getting out at 10 PM in the dark and forgetting about power steering fluid all over an aggregate driveway = no fun.

oh so you didnt put the new hose on yet. Is it the whole line your replacing? (it can be un bolted and removed)

Unfortunately, yeah. The whole line. I'm not too worried about it, I've just heard a lot of fun stories about trying to get the banjo bolt on the lower end of the hose to line up properly.

I've got the hose just sitting around...I'm just waiting for my buddy at the shop I go to to get some free time so we can put the Max up on his lift instead of me trying to fidget around with the banjo bolt on jackstands.

where did you get the line from? It will be easier for her to change the line versus pulling the whole pump.

A parts manager at one of the local dealers I know ordered it for me. It was $140. I think Nissan wanted about $225...

What about her calling Dave B? My guy ordered the part and it was in by 2:30 the next day.
