HELP! I'm hearing this funny noise...

OK, guys, I may have missed this somewhere, but I've got this weird noise coming from the y-pipe/tranny area. It sounds like something rattling around in there (kinda like some marbles in a tin can or something) when I put my car in gear from a stop. I've been hearing this sound for a little while now, but I'm just not sure what it could be.

BTW - I've had most of the major stuff done (tranny rebuilt, water pump, timing belt, drive belts changed, tune-up, etc.) within the last 6 months or so. I'm hoping that it's just the y-pipe and that it's time to replace it (was planning on doing that anyway) but I'm just not sure. Thanks for the advice in advance.

From my experience from hearing the same tin rattle, it a loose exhaust shield.

It's probably the heat shield under the Catalytic Converter, I had a similar sound, took it off and the sound stopped.

ive had 2 maxes.one was a 90. (crashed it b4 x-mas) now i got a 91. they both have the same problem and it is definitely the y pipe shiels or sumthing in the y pipe because i changed my exhaust from the flex tube back and the noise was and is still there. a mechanic thought it could be some type of broken screen in the y pipe like in a cat? its a comon problem though. a good excuse for a h.p. y pipe!

Many thanks!!!

Thanks for the diagnosis, guys!

I was pretty sure that was the problem, but I figured I'd make sure and ask!

Thanks again - and I'll see you with more hp after this gets done!

The answer is...

Guys,

The answer to this problem was the engine mounts - they'd never been replaced, which is what was causing the rattling noise. Had to have it all redone when I had the last tranny job done.
