Seriously, if you keep the tube inside the splash guard, you probably won't get much more dirt that you would through the stock air scoop. If you place the tube outside the splash guard, however, you'll probably end up ingesting more dirt.
UMD_MaxSE has the right idea. Just check your K&N panel filter regularly for signs of excessive dirt buildup and clean it as necessary.

Actually though, I had my filter out just the other day and it ins't any dirtier than normal. It doesn't appear that I'm taking in too much cr@p at all... which is very suprising living here in AZ with all of the dust, dirt and construction going on here (as you have already experienced).
