Service engine Light

I have a 98 GXE that the previous owner replaced the auto trans with a nissan 5-speed. I know the service engine soon light stays on because it is looking for the auto trans. HOw can I have it monitor the 5- speed without having to but a new wiring harness or is that the only way? and is it safe to be running it like this. I try to have the codes read every month to make sure that they are all for the auto trans. Any suggestions???
