95 SE 5-speed, 142,000 should it have problems?

I work with someone who's husband is selling a 95 Superblack, grey leather interior 5 speed. The car has been kept up from what I have been told and has had no problems. The clutch was changed at around 120,000 miles but other than that there has been nothing else done.

He has not found out how much it is worth and said he would be selling it for between 4,500 - 5,000. I blue booked it at 4,400 so that shouldn't be a problem.

My question is should I get this car, or will it have mechanical issues that have not played out yet, when did you start having problems with your max.

A superblack five speed max is just an awesome and rare thing to come by, but I don't want to get into somthing that will cost me in the long run.

If I was considering it what should I have tested?
compression, etc, etc?

I wouldnt get that. Thats a lot of miles. Even though the car SHOULD last another 100k miles, its not going to be a happy perfect 100k. And if you plan on moding it it will last even longer. If yuo need a cheap, reliable form of transportation that will not be beaten, tracked, autoxed, etc, then its not bad. Id offer him 3k and see what he says.

If you want to mod and race, save your money and buy one with less miles.

Price...

Hey,
-I'm not going to argue about the price, I didn't look into that.-
-I bought a 95 GXE 1.5 years ago. I have had only one problem, one injector went. It had 180000km and now has 120000km on it. It runs like a charm and has NEVER stoped on me. I still pull a low 15sec 1/4 mile with no problem. My compression is the highest among any car I have ever test, running at an average of 220psi. My #3 cylindar is the lowest at 210, which is nothing to worry about. I do not add treatment to the engine, and she does not burn any oil. Up here we have to have regular emmissions tests, and I have no worries there at all.
-The one thing I would do different now is purchase a car that 'looks a bit nicer'. ie. i like the maxima, but i don't care for the color or the hub-caps. i just put rims on it, and it looks a lot nicer, but if you purchase it the way you like it, you will save money in the long run.
-The one you are looking at is a 'looker'. That's nice. I would go that way in the future.
-As stated earlier, if you want to mod it and race, then you are better off with a newer engine...
--bottom line:
i like my car... i race it all the time, (though i know i shouldn't), and i have had no problem... (knock on wood) i know i need to ease up on the gas, spinning tires, constant clutch dumps, etc. i'm on my 3rd set of tires since i bought it 18 months ago. these are performance tires... but to par, she's still kicking hard!

good luck on your decision!!

Please tell me that you really meant 220,000km (approx. 136,000miles for our US friends)not 120,000. Otherwise, you spend a LOT of time driving in reverse.

I wanted a five speed but I will just stick with my 96 automagic, it has 80,000 miles and 20,000 left on the warranty. It is also pretty quick with the homemade intake, and Y-pipe. Just last night it made me very proud.

Took Down:
3 civics
Honda Accord V6 coupe with "Powered by Honda" stickers on the side, gave him the jump and still destroyed him, his girl was filming it from the passenger seat; I asked if he was going to post it on the net and he said no
Sunfire GT
Stupid F150 with altezzas
My favorite of the night 3rd Gen Max

Previously I have beaten
Oldsmobile Aurora V8
Lincoln Mark VIII V8
3.2 TL
Grand Am GT
MX-6
and others

-Whew I have been busy at the track.

So I am going to keep my 96 until I graduate and get the car that I will really sink the funds into. If anyone is interested in it let me know, it is in the OKC area.

Realistically the car is worth about $4k, and no more. Thats what the market is for those cars. As for the milage being too high, the answer it might be and might not be. A well maintained high milage car is still a good car, this is especially true for a maxima. Plus a 140k highway miles is a lot easier on a car then 140k city driving miles. All in all maxima's are reliable, my 17year old brother has an 89 with 170k miles and it never breaks down. Check the engine compression, o2 sensors, knock sensor, coil packs, and tranny, and if everything checks out buy it. I hope that helps

The car is a little aged and also has pretty high miles. Buy it cheap and be prepared to need to start replacing things that normally come with age: Knock sensor, O2 sensors, belts, coil packs, axles, exhaust, hoses, etc. I definitely agree with others that pricing should be around $4k with those miles.

Still a dandy of a car though. Good luck!

I wouldn't be too worried, that car is built to last. I have 165,000 miles on my GXE Auto, I bought it 18 months ago with 141,000. Since then I've put on a new set of tires, and last week I had a ball joint and some bushings replaced. Other than that, everything's fine...although the stock exhaust system [flex pipe, muffler] is showing some wear, and may have to be replaced in the next year or so. I have great faith in the mechanical integrity of my car, and don't hesitate to take it on long trips or anything.

Go for it...best of luck!
