What size bolts is this ?

Hey guys, what is the size of the bolts in the below pics ? I need to go buy 2 of these bolts in orders to re-position my engine stand so it allow to remove the upper oil pan.

What size socket was used on the bolt that came out? 14 or 17mm?

If you used a 14mm socket, then it's M10x1.25.

If you used a 17mm socket, then it's M12x1.25.

Also, you can measure the ID of the hole you are pointing at. If it's 9mm, then it's a M10 bolt. If it's about 11mm, then it's a M12 bolt.

In Japanese (JIS) sizing, the M10 and M12 bolts only have a 1.25 pitch.

I called a local suppliers, they only have the M12 x 1.75 in stock but need to special order the M12 x 1.25 I want to make shure I order the right size bolts can you please confirm.

The local supplier carry DIN/931-933 precision bolts, would that be different than JIS ? The size I see in their catalogue is M12 x 1.75 the 1.25 is only available in M8 size. I'm going to call them right now and see what they say.
No, DIN is a European Metric. JIS is Japanese Metric used in the Maxima. They are two completely different Metric Scales.

The M12 DIN has a 1.75 pitch.

The M12 JIS has a 1.25 pitch.

The M8 DIN has a 1.25 pitch but uses a 13mm socket. The M8 JIS has a 1.25 pitch as well, but uses a 12mm socket.

Your local hardware store (Ace or Lowes) may have the bolts you need in stock.

Get a vernier caliper and measure the ID of the hole to be sure you need an M10 or M12. But I'm sure you need a JIS metric bolt.

Ok I see. Most store seem to carry standard english bolt size but not JIS, anyway I'm going to order the M12 x 1.25

I have several M12 bolts laying around. That's the bolt that the motor mounts and engine crossmember use.

What length do you need? I can drop one in the mail for you today.

Hey Aaron, I finally order few 75mm M12 x 1.25 at a local specialized shop, they'll have it by tomorrow.

No problem. Hope they work for you!

It would have been best to measure the hole before ordering those bolts b/c I am still unsure if it's M10 or M12. But if you say you used a 17mm socket, then it's M12.

It was longer to order those from Nissan, the place I bought it from could get it in a day or two. I dont know the Nissan price but I paid 2.95/each cdn.

I agree. Typically when the threaded hole is in a casting, be it iron or aluminum, the 12mm thread pitch is 1.75mm.

I've tried some of the engine support bolt and they didn't seem to be the right one, I didn't want to force them and fock the thread in the housing, anyway not a big deal I ordered 4 x 75mm M12 x 1.25 JIS, if that doesn't work then I'll pick up the M12 x 1.75 but those are easy to get. I'll let you know which one where the good one.

My 1992 Maxima has nothing but JIS bolts. So the M12 bolts in my car use a 17mm wrench and a 1.25 pitch. All my tranny bolts are JIS M10x1.25, even with it being cast. I've noticed the newer import cars get, the more you'll find non-JIS bolts. And you can sometimes find SAE bolts!

doublea, sorry if I made you order the wrong bolt. But the only way to be sure is to buy a vernier caliper and a pitch gauge shown in eng92's picture. You can use the pitch gauge to determine the pitch of the threads you pointed at.

Hey Aaron, I went to pick 2 x M12 1.75 x 75 mm this morning so I'll check those tonight. The M12 x 1.25 JIS had to be ordered at a different place but again it's no big deal if not the right size they'll reach their cousin on my benchwork in the garage. Lol

the tranny bolts are definitely not 1.25 thread pitch bolts on a 4th gen, they are 1.75, sorry i didn't mention that earlier. i was thinking it but then that thought kindof went by the wayside because it seemed you had figured out what you needed to. if you ordered 1.25 thread pitch bolts they are not going to work. trans bolts are coarse thread not fine thread.

Yeah, I've never messed with the tranny on a 4th gen. But on the VE RE4F04V, they are definitely 1.25 pitch.

Or, if you want one that's plenty long enough for the flange on the engine stand, use 31377-89F02- M12X1.75X125. I get $1.94 for it.

Watch out, Aaron. so are the ones holding the engine mount brackets to the block are 10 x 1.5mm. I thought the tranny bolts were 10 x 1.5mm too, not 1.25mm..

But I don't remember for sure now.. I wound up trapping them to the wrong thread trying to clean some surface rust out of the threads. FUBAR'd the threads in the block so I wound up drilling them all out and helicoiling them with 3/8"-16 bolts since they're easy to find at the hardware store.

What are you trying to say? I know the bolts holding the tranny to the block are M10x1.25 JIS.

Edit: Nevermind. I know what you mean. The bolts holding the engine mount bracket to the block are M10x1.5 and you messed it up by using that bolt on your tranny casing which is M10x1.25.

Good find though. I never knew this.

I thought I remembered the tranny bolts being 1.5, not 1.25....
the block --> engine mounts are definitely 1.5mm tho.

I wound up just helicoiling them all and using 3/8" after I fubard them with the wrong tap.
(ironic.... after I FUBARd the engine mount bolts using a 1.25mm tap, I assumed the tranny was the wrong one and wound up tapping both engine mount and tranny mount holes with 1.25 AND 1.5mm taps. I could run a bolt of either size in them, but neither would hold torque. DOH!!. that's where the helicoil came in.

Ok guys it seems that the M12 x 1.75 are working fine, I've inserted one and was able to turn 2 times but I then took the socket and was able to screw in easily, I've check the thread on the bolt once remove and there was no shaving.

I'm going to check the other holes later this evening.
