While cranking, down around 10v is the lowest it should go with a decent battery, running 13-15v.

yall?

Don't just run a cable from one side of the transmission to the engine block. Also add a 'jumper strap' connecting each side of the transmission.

run a ground from the engine block to the BODY
run a ground from the tranny(bellhousing) to the BODY
the block doesnt ground too well through the rubber engine mounts

I'd do that 1st.

Is it throwing any codes?

i'll have to check the codes on friday at a friends shop....

but its official....the car won't start at all now. i went out tonight to try to start it and it just backfired and smelled like gas pretty badly. does this mean that the cam position sensor or the crank position sensor must be bad? i don't understand how my ground wires can fix the problem then all the sudden 5 months later the grounds so bad.....it should be the sensors right?

if the car is running and the sensor is unplugged should the car still run or will it die? i'm confused as to how these two sensors work on this car......

p.s......i do have four different ground wires. some to the frame...some to the battery.

yeah that was the last one that i grounded. the other one from the starter to tranny and tranny to negative terminal and tranny to frame didn't fix anything. the only one that fixed the problem was when i ran a wire from the block to the tranny.

sorry about that......if one of the sensors is a problem then will the CEL light come on?

cel should come on IIRC for a ckp,,etc but test em anyhow
what exactly is it doing when it gives you trouble, 'funny starting', 'bucking and kicking'

other than that nothing. it won't start. it just keeps doing that. a couple times it backfired so loud i think i woke some people up in the dorms. haha.

well...actually one time it did something funny. it started turning over really really slowly. almost sounded like the battery was about to die. so i let the key off....then a few seconds later tried to start it again and it turned over at normal speeds except it started bucking and kicking again. i hope i explained that well.....i can't test the sensors until friday....the problem will be getting it to my friends shop...

update guys. i went out to start the car tonight and the starter sounded horrible like it was grinding or something. anyways one of the wires on the starter was showing and it was freaking hot. so now the starter just clicks. my friend and i pushed the car and dropped the clutch and the car started right up!! so obviously my starter is dead. don't they have a 10 tooth upgraded starter??

I believe the 2001 I30 is an 11 tooth and it should fit your max.

would this be my best bet to get that? or just get a remanufactured one for my 97? are they both probably about the same price?

I dont think there is a difference other then tooth count. The higher tooth count will give you a faster start, so I have heard. You should be able to locate a used starter from a junk yard. There is a link floating around the forums for a nationwide junkyard website, but I cant seem to locate it. Anyone have that link handy?
