finally fixed my hard start problem
my car used to crank and crank forever, it would eventually start but when it was cold out it took forever. i thought it was a fuel problem at first, then thought it was a weak battery. came to find out it was just that the starter was not turning fast enough. the starter must spin the engine fast enough or will it not start. replaced the starter and it fixed it completely. now i just bump the key and it fires right up. just thought i'd share.

wow this week has been NUTS for this, but the problem is likely not the starter,
you need to ground the starter to the tranny, and ground the tranny to the body. the existing ground off the tranny is crap, and likely corroded to hell by now. This was my problem after 2 starters, as well as an infinate number of other members who spent WAY too much money on other stuff trying to find the problem. BTW your problem will more than 90% surely come back if you dont ground that starter and tranny. Write that down.

so far the problem has completely gone away for me but i'll post here if it does come back. i don't know what brand starter it was, i didn't feel like laying in the driveway to fix it so i took it to a shop.

I had hard starting issues on my 96. After reading some of the posts here, I cleaned up the existing ground connections at the left cylinder head and under the airbox at the body surface with a 3M Scotchbrite wheel, applied a little dielectric grease and reattached the grounds. My starting trouble has disappeared now, tap on plastic

I havent got a camera or I'd do a write up, but I've went over the basics in a couple threads concerning this, someone should do a write up, it'd be nice to have a 'STARTING PROBLEMS' sticky, as with our cars this is one of the most common issues.

^^^^I dont know the autos. But that's likely a dowel for bolting the tranny up that you're referring to, its likely not threaded. Just remove one of the upper bolts from the trans, clean it up, measure your wire length from a starter bolt to the bolt you are gonna use on the trans,
then measure the length of wire from the bolt on the tranny to the body ground you select ( I used the upper strut stud for ease of install just make sure you sand off the paint and primer down to bare metal). When you have the wire cut (there should be 2 wires) crimp on some 3/8" eyeletts, and install.

^^^^It is threaded. I checked a while ago. I was going to add a ground there, then got side-tracked. It looks like it's pretty ideal for attaching a ground wire.
You said there should be 2 wires--you mean from starter to tranny and from tranny to body, right?

I've been planning on doing a very simple write-up about how to perform a voltage drop test, if anyone does any sort of "starting problems" writeup and does not include this it for damn sure better not make a sticky, I'll be heated.

Sticky needed....
I took your advice and googled voltage drop KRR, nice links to that voltage drop tests and info, plus some nice schematics to follow too. Attaching those links to your write up would be a great addition to this overdue sticky! :}

Replacing or adding ground wires is always a good thing, i have added 6 4gauge wires to the car and replaced the dreaded rusted tranny ground by the driver front wheel...
To those who have done any work near the battery, trace the -ve batt cable down to where it connects to the block, you will be surprised and amazed at how nissan grounded the battery... The wire coming off the bolt is bare and for me at least was full of salt and corrosion. the tranny ground wire was simply too skinny, too exposed, and rusted to heck.
Adding the ground wire from the starter to the chassis gave me the most noticeable difference btw
