i just bought a set of kyb gr2's as replacement for my dead shocks.

instead of going to autozone and rent one, i want to actually buy one.

anybody recomend a decent compressor that is <50 bux. i know a lot of cheap ones out on ebay. but not sure whats good to use.

figure out how much a places charges to rent, pay in cash and get a used set for a decent price? just an idea. but there is probably a more honest way to go about it.

you can buy the same kind your can rent at autozone. Those are quality and wont break. Unlike the Harbor freights cheap asssss spring compressor.

Buy the ones from Sears, they have a life time warranty for $40.00 and have the safety pins so they don't slip off and kill you.

CarQuest usually stocks them and they list around $40-45 if I remember correctly.

Agree on skipping the Harbor Freight ones. You need one with safety locks/pins.

Jaw-types are awesome, but not nearly as good as the mounted press-types they usually have in shops. In general the more sturdy/big the compressor is, the better.

Bumping this up, just had to say that this one is awesome! I used it once time at a friends garage, I've done over 100 suspensions in the past 2 years out of my garage and I used the Jaw type compressor and that center nut, just stripped on the Harbo freight one. I've had the autozone rental shyts for 2 years now, there's a science to them, as for the lisle ones posted above, its beautiful beacause the ***** are far away fromt the tophat, and strut housing so it doesnt have to be done a specific way or mounted a specific way. Love em.

I have tried the hydraulic type spring compressor and the Sears ones and i like the Sears ones better. The safety pin is a must have imo. If you have access to an air compressor, the job will go really quick.

I dunno if autozone does the same but advance loans you tools, all you have to do is pay for the tools, and when you are done you get a full refund back.

agree entirely. Plus they have enough clearance for your impact/socket driver to clear the top hat (which some compressors don't).

I tried the sears ones and stripped them the first time I used them I'll never use them again. I like the design of the clam style except only having one screw that's going to strip even easier. Really if anybody does quite a few they need to invest in a branick wall mound style but they are expensive. I know a few mechanics that won't use anything else as they've seen the accidents from the regular ones. Lots of energy stored it springs well unless it's a civic you almost don't even need anything for those lame things.

Yeah, those branick spring compressors are expensive. Although they are worth the cost from a safety standpoint. Also, I'm sure getting the dealer to change your springs would cost a pretty penny too. If I had the money, I'd get one.

I bought 2 sets from Advance auto! They can compress very small diameter coil springs with ease such as the rear coil springs on Gen 4 and 5! Just make sure you lube any of the bolt type spring compressors assy or you will gall up the thread while using it! I've done about 10 cars with the sets I have! I don't have the p/n or Manufacture name ! But they are the really small cute ones @ Advance Auto Parts
