Diferential Diagnosis - Starter Vs. Power steering Pump

I have posted before about a dreaded sound comming from the engine bay right after start up and stays there for a second.

I thought it was my starter i.e. the teeth not dis-engaging from the fly or something. Well, went to get my starter changed out and the mechanic told me it was my power steering system/pump.

Before I go and replace it, has anyone else had this noise come from their power steering pump? He said a flush of the system will help. Just wanted a 2nd opinion before I drop the $$.

thanks,

I describe it like a mix of a dying geese...almost like a drawn out honk noise. at first I thought it was the starter teeth grinding on each other.

Just want to be sure before I start changing all the parts. I got burned before at the mechanics to fix a sound in my suspension. $250 later, the sound was still there and had to go in to fix other parts.

Yeah I have that sound. It happens every once in awhile and I am just waiting for it to warm up so I can take a look at it.

Have you replaced your drive belt or power steering belt at all, recently?

That mechanic doesn't sound like he knows anything. Flushing the system won't do anything for noise. He's trying to get extra cash out of you. Check the belts for cracks, wear, or age. If the belts look like they are bad just change them out. The cost to replace belts are about $60.00 from a mechanic. $20.00 just for parts.

Sorry I can't get over how goofy that car carrier on your roof looks.

I am just going to re-grease my starter when the weather warms up to rule that out. I will do the P/S fluid change myself based on motorvate.ca website.

Will a loose belt make that noise as well? There is sometimes a squeel on start up as well.

I know...it is goofy but the Maxima Trunk Blows...especially with those extra large amps on each speaker. Can't get any of my snowboarding, camping gear in the car. Also protects the leather on my rear seats from wet equipment.

If the belts have too much slack you will usually have a slight squeel at start up and than after the car warms up it would normally go away. It wouldn't hurt changing both belts if your car has a lot of mileage on it.
