Trying to replace the rear main oil seal
I have the tranny apart and everything. I got my new retainer and seal and am attempting to put it on and I can not get it on for the life of me. I just tried for the past hour and I have not been even close to success. it seems as if the lip gasket is too thick and so I can't put the seal back over the crankshaft. If anyone has any helpful suggestions as to what they did that would be great.

You need a seal punch tool to successfully install the seal. Or you can do it the hard way and do what I30ds did, his thread is listed in the forum. My friend has this tool in his shop so I wouldn't know where to rent this tool from. Try Autozone.

I guess I'll try that. Although I don't know how this will work. Hopefully I can get it done before saturday. Anyone else have any suggestions?

Well I would use a rubber mallet. The problem is with the lip seal on the bottom of the retainer. It is so thick. It's seems almost impossible to get it in. Otherwise I could just slide it right in. This is turning out to be much more difficult then anticipated. Plus you are in a 5 minute time limit before the liquid gasket begins to dry. So it looks like I'll have to figure out how to install it then take it off put on the gasket and do it again.

I farted around with this thing for almost 2 hours! It is not that easy to do. And for those who have had no problem with this, it's probably because they reused the old dust (lower) seal. The new seal is somewhat thicker. That's when I used the seal punch tool (#89613G8G) recommended by my Chiltons manual. My friend happened to have it in his shop.

It is possible to get it in with just a screw driver... You just have to keep trying. Dont worry about the liquid gasket drying... just seal it up at the end like in my picure. I suggest, however, that you use a 10mm nut driver ONLY... Even a wrench will provide too much power and snap the tender bolts... That is what happened to me!!

Well I finally got the seal in. It looks like crap so I liquid gasketed it to hell. There should be no more leaks ever. If there is I'm just going to buy a 3.5 engine. I'm supposed to get my tranny back today so I can put it in probably tomorrow. I can't wait to have my car up and running again. It's been 2 weeks already.

Well when I was shoving it in there the half circle lip gasket was doing fine and then all of a sudden it stopped. So part of it is bulging out. I tried as hard as I could to shove more in there but it was not going happen. I was reasonably sure that it was a good enough seal but I'd rather be safe than sorry. The next time I want to drop my tranny is when I do the 3.5 swap. Not to replace the seal again. But it still sucks the shop that is doing my tranny keeps getting the wrong parts from the vendor so they arre finally going to order the stuff from the dealer but I'm sure it won't get here until next friday. So this will be 3 weeks now that my car has been down. I miss it so much. I'm having withdrawals everytime I walk outside and see it on the jackstands.

For all seals of this design I'd recommend a 3/8" extension and a hammer... oil both sides of the seal slightly, and push it into place as much as you can. Slowly and GENTLY tap around the face of the seal using the blunt/flat part of the extension (not the open receiving end). Once the seal is somewhat secure (i.e. it won't pop out the opposing side when you hit one side with some force) start tapping the seal with a little more force in a circular motion so it goes in evenly until it is flush with the mating surface. Using anything smaller or more pointed can damage the seal. A seal tool is best, but not everyone is going to go buy the damn thing just to use it one.
Hope that helps anyone that comes across this post searching.
