Thoughts on 5A in 5.5g?

Just here kicking around some thoughts about fitting the 5A that's found in the 04+, in the 5.5g. It would help out quite a bit. And also aid for less ownage going 70+ .... Just some thoughts. What are the restrictions, TCM / ECU issues? ?

Here's some comparisons.
Ratios
4.657 ------ 2.785
3.032 ------ 1.545
1.982 ------ 1.000
1.341 ------ 0.694
1.018 -------------

F/D 2.440 ----F/D 3.789

Mph = rpm x tire diameter/Gear ratio x 336
Rpm = mph x gear ratio x 336/Tire diameter

These are pretty close to the previous generaion 5spd Manual ...

A little further analysis shows that

Here's some interesting data I got.

MPH @ at 6500 redline

--------5A---5M----6M----4A
1st ----44----40-----41----47
2nd ---67----70-----67----85
3rd ---103--102-----94---132
4th----152--137----124---190
5th----201--164----164
6th-------------------208

RPM @ 75 mph cruising

4A--------2562
5A--------2420
5M--------2961
6M--------2340

What this means ... much better acceleration for 1/8- 1/4 and above, slightly better gas mileage (not really but on paper yes) And also gives for more responsive spirited highway driving.

Thanks.

I drove a G35C 5A the other day, and it made me really think about this, as it really complimented the power band. Even though the 5A G35 and Max have different 5A trannys, they are pretty close in terms of ratios, and well anything's better than a 4A, but i'm glad we didn't get caught with a 3A .. lol my sister had an automatic Cavalier with a 2.2L 3A ..

could you adapt the 5 speed auto to a 4th gen? and if so how much modification would it take?

Now taht I don't know. I think it be better to swap the 5M in tehre instead of as 5A since it's already been done.

I'd still stick with the 5M, because the 6m robs more pwoer and the gears aren't that great compares to the auto. The 5A in a 4g will probably be harder to do b/c of ECU issues.

I wouldn't discount the effect on gas mileage so quickly. I think you can actually see a difference in real world driving. Given the same fuel capacity, the new 2005 5A Altima does have a better range than the old 4A. I forget the exact difference though.

As for doing a swap in a 5.5 Max, I would also have to wonder about mounting points and tunnel clearance and drive shafts, in addition to the TCM/ECU. Oh well... Guess we'll never know for sure.

Don't cant me out yet .... the configuration seems to be the same as well. the 4A and 6M are both identical in the 02-05(besides the 6M's shorter F/D) So how about the 5A? I'm trying tog et my hands on the FSM. As for the gas mileage, do you think you could find that somewhere and find a link?

Funny about the first few posts ... I am still thinking of entertaining this idea, it will be my summer project. Im more worried about software issues than anything else.

Hate to resurrect a dead thread, but I'm wondering if anyone knows what the 5.5 gen gear ratios are for the 6 speed manual?I looked on the org and online, and it seems pretty difficult to find. I was able to find a list of gear ratios for the 6th gen 6 speed, but I know that the final drive for the 5.5 is different than what was listed for the 6th gen, which makes me think that the gear ratios may be different as well. Anyone know?

For the 6MT, A34 and A33B gear ratios are the same, the only difference is the F/D.

(4.133 vs 3.812)

A33B
F/D = 3.812

1st = 3.153
2nd = 1.944
3rd = 1.392
4th = 1.055
5th = 0.809
6th = 0.630
