First time at the track - 14.423

I just went to the track last night with my 02 Max for the first time. My best run was a 14.423 @ 92.026 with a 2.168 60'. I didn't shift into forth on that run thats why my mph is low. However, my highest mph of the night was a 93.319. Is this mph low for a for a bone stock 2002 Max 6 speed? Also, sometimes I had some real bad wheel hop on the 1-2 shift. Are guys riding the clutch on this shift? Finally, are guys shifting early on the 3-4 shift or is anybody else not shifting?

Next time I go I will have 93 octane in the tank and a tire pressure gauge.

Those times seem right but the traps seem a little low. Excellent 60 fts for your first time at the track.

Pull your codes, that mph is simply too low. You should be trapping 95-96 mph. You seem to be a really good driver for the mph, though.

gears and crosses...your times are very impressive if you ask me....2.1 60ft in a 6spd is so hard for me...haha i only managed a 2.45 at BEST my first time out.....

also your holding 3rd gear in yer 6spd? wow I heard that it was almost impossible to hold 3rd gear in the 6spd without bouncing off the rev limiter....I never tried 1/4th mile in my 6spd yet....but I think even if i shifted redline ever gear...I would stilll have to shift into 4th in 1/4th mile....just judging from how quick the tach needle swings up compared to my old 4th gen 5spd.....even my old 4th gen had to go into 4th gear for 1/4th mile racing...i had i/y/e and short shifted the 2-3 and 3-4 shifts at like 6200RPMs

Thanks for all for the complements, but I really have to the credit to track however. They really sprayed down the track with VHT that night. I have also learned alot from this site, so I thank you.

JClaw, I might need to pull my codes. My car REALLY lays down above 80 mph. Any ideas/reasons???

Ceasar, you might want to try Hub City dragway one time before it gets hot. The track prep was awesome last Friday.

Any recomendations on the 1-2 shift?

Thanks again,
Gears

Steven, remember to burn the clutch and not the tires. Try playing with the tire pressure too. I found out later that on my best pass I had 26 psi. You can try different tracks also, if they are available. If you can afford some Nittos, those would help alot.

I wanted to tell you that I definitely hit the rev limiter on that pass - then coasted. I just tried it just once (its an old 5.0 Mustang tip) and I'm really not sure if it helped. I shifted right before red line on all shifts give or take 200 rpm.

By the way Steven88, you have a sharp looking car,

I take my 1st gear all the way to 6900 (6600 rev limiter)...the stock tach is off that is why I take mine to 6900....then I do a speed shift...not power shift but speed shift....

a speed shift is when you shift as quickly as possible with the clutch, and letting go of the gas....a power shift is when you shift quickly as possible by using the clutch but not letting go of the gas....and a clutchless shifting is...you guessed it....mashing on the gas while shifting the gears without using your clutch

The deeper you can take the 1-2 shift the better.

dont let off the gas all the way when you shift to 2nd, also drag the clutch just a tad when ure shifting to 2nd, this should help the wheel hop a bit.
The 60ft is good but youre right, the trap seems extremely low. It should be 96-97mph if you ask me which would have been a 14.1-14.2 with the 60ft you got. Definitely run 93 octane next time and make sure your air filter's clean. Hell, even remove it for a run or 2 just to see.

On ALL VQ-powered maximas, the Knock Sensor loves to take a dump on you for no reason. This retards timing and has been known to be able to rob you of 15-20 hp. 93 octane certainly helps. Always use 91-94 octane. With the same 60' and a normal ~96 mph trap, you would/should pull a low, low 14-second pass, I believe the current record is 14.09. No stock manual Maxima, or Altima, has been known to hit 13.99 stock. Feel free to be the first

There was a thread about the optimal shift points a while ago. I've never driven a 2k2 6-speed since I'm poor, but while 4th gen 5-speeds seem to benefit from shifting gradually lower as you go through the gears (I pulled a 15.003@91 mph in my stock 1995 while shifting 6600, 6400 and 6200), 6-speeds should supposedly redline every gear. Simply put, as far as you can f*cking go.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Sorry for my late reply.

I will definitely shift as late as possible on the 1-2 shift. I always speed shift but never powershift because I like my tranny too much. My trans is feeling a little notch anyway. I need to change the tranny fluid bad. I am having a lot of trouble finding sythetic GL-4 fluid. I know I can order it but I want to do it ASAP, but thats another story.

Thanks for the advice Plano. Thats what I'll try next time. I need to drag that clutch just a hair. I'm used to driving my Mustang and hammering 2nd.
My air filter was brand new with fresh motor oil on that run btw. I do need to make a confession though. I think I had 89 octane in the car that night not 91 like I thought. I didn't have any pinging since it was so cool. Oh well, my bad.
