91 Maxima Tranny problem

Hi everyone, new to the forum here and have a question. I have never had any previous problem with this, but this afternoon I went to a ice cream shop, when I left there I started the car and went to put into gear and the button on the shifter wouldn't go in and yes my foot was on the brake. I finally seen that the taillights weren't working so I went to check for a blown fuse. Sure enough, it was the 3rd fuse from the bottom on the left side, 15 amp fuse. I put another one in there but as soon as I hit the brake the fuse would blown before I could put it into gear. I went through 4 fuses. I figured I wasn't going to get into gear that way and I needed to get the car home so I could start looking for the problem so I stuck a screw driver where the fuse was suppose to go just long enought to get the car into gear, worked good and I got the car home. Now, is this a common problem with these cars? I've only had the car for 7 months or so. I know I have a short somewhere but I figured I could post here first to see if this was a common problem.

Thank you for any help you could give me.
Chuck

Also, the car is for sale, I have pics if anyone wants it. Make a offer, I really don't know what they go for. No smart a$$es please.

something must be shorting out for the fuse to blow consecutively like that. I would check all the wirings that are in the trunk, maybe something is exposed and are shorting out. As for the car for sale part, mileage? model year? condition? anything that people should be aware of?

Generaly speaking, people have gotten anywhere from 4 gran to a few hundred bucks. If the car is in bad condition and you think you won't get much for it, just part it out and sell it to org members.

edit: oops, didn't read the post close enough, no I believe that it is not a common problem.

Check for corrosion in the taillight sockets.
also you can get around the solenoid by pressing the button all the way at the base of the shifter.

I don't have a button at the base of the shifter. I will check the taillights sockets as I noticed that one bulb was burnt out on the drivers taillight.

Keep the ideas coming as I'll be trying them out tonight when I get home from work.

Thanks
Chuck

I found the button at the bottom of the shifter you were talking about. Thanks. I also found what was causing the problem and I have fixed it. Thank you to everyone for your suggestions.

There was a screw that holds the light bulb socket onto the tailight panel and the bulb got so hot ie melted the screw out of the hole and onto the inside of the tailight lens from the inside. That screw also holds down some wires which were just loose thus causing the short or bad connection. I replaced it with a another screw, ( bigger one) and everything works great.
Thanks again
