Stereo removal
i was wondering what's the right way to remove the stock stereo from a '98 maxima? i just need to get it out far enough to mess with the cables in the back but since i haven't tried it with this car yet, i don't know if you need a special tool or not. any and all information will be appreciated. thanks!

start off by taking off the bezel around the shift lever. Then the ash tray. Then you'll see 1 or 2 screws behind the ash tray.
Then take out the center vents. just pull. 2 more screws under there. Then the radio/climate control unit will be able to be pulled out.
These are things you just have to do.

this was extremely helpful, thanks. what i want to do is figure out how to hardwire my ipod to my stereo. i spent a long time last night looking for information on this last night and i can't find any definitive answers as to if this is possible with my maxima's stock bose stereo. do you guys know if it is and if so, how do i go about figuring out how to do it? the kit that i found online is $219 and back-ordered for 90 days so i was hoping i could just mickey-mouse it myself somehow. any thoughts?
if not, do you know of a stereo i could buy to replace the one i have that would allow me to do this?

yeah i have read all the reviews i could find on those products and i really would like to hardwire it. if there isn't a way to do it with my stock radio, do you know of a another stereo i could buy that would make this sort of thing easier to accomplish?

those are called FM transceivers. Thats another option but you may get static.
The stock system is pretty non-user friendly when it comes to modifications.
The impedance is 1 ohm for the stock bose. All aftermarket radios are 4 ohm. The 1 ohm bose impedance is converted to 2 or 4 ohm (I think) at each individual amplifier.
I think bose did this and put ****ty components in the speakers so everyone would keep buying spare parts.
But what most people do is just take out the whole thing and replace the entire system.
As far as hard wiring your ipod, you could get a head unit with an MP3/CD input jack on the face. Or you can get a radio with a DVD player input and use that audio jack for your ipod.
There are many possibilities as long as you have money.
I see apple making a car radio where you can plug your ipod right in there. Like an 8 track.
Wouldnt that be great
