Re: I need your help guys!!

Dude I did the the oil seal about two weeks ago. I needed to borrow an impact wrench from a friend. I you dont have an impact wrench and a compressor it may be really difficult to get it off.
Even with the imapct wrench it still took a few minutes for the impact wrench to do its thing.
what you would need is a second wrench to hold the pully (something I dont know where to find, but back when I didnt have a compressor my dad was able to make one in the shop for his car.) This wrench would have two long pins to fit into the two holes in the pulley AND a large hole in the middle to allow the main wrench to enter the middle and remove the main bolt.)
When I installed the pulley I had no way of torquing the bolt on properly so I had to guess when using the impact wrench. If you didnt know its torqued on to about 120 ftlbs.
the pulley is keyed on so it will slide right off (no pulley puller necessary).
Good luck dude

Re: Re: I need your help guys!!

you mean a torque wrench? and what about that other thing to hold the pully in place? is there something you can thing of that I can use? I Mean I don't want to go and spent big $$$ to custom make some tool just for this. If you can think of anything please let me know.
Thanks for the help.

auto or manual trans?

on the 300ZX auto trans, the starter has to be removed and the flywheel needs to be jammed to keep it from spinning.

Got rice? might be right

When I did the water pump I had to jam the pulley on the pump in order to remove the small bolts.
You can try to cut a twobyfour or something into a wedge shape and hammer the wedge in, just dont over do it, there is still a chance to deform the metal.
You may also want to extend the length of the handle on the wrench so that you dont have to work as hard when you remove the bolt.

You may want to just purchase an electric impact wrench. They cost ~$70

they make a special harmonic balancer puller for this task. i'm pretty sure it'll work on that pully.

even with an impact wrench it might spin. and from what i've heard those electrical impact wrenches really aren't worth the $$$. You'd prolly be better off borrowing a compressor and renting the tools. you can probably rent them from somewhere. there's a place near me that rents that kinda stuff. just my .02

I guess it could still spin... but an electric impact wrench that looked exactly like the one on that page took off my bolt in about 5 seconds... And that same one has removed one from a friend's Eclipse. Honestly, if you don't have a compressor (and have no plans to get one) then the electric impact wrench can come in handy. I think they are quite useful to say the least.

If I didn't have a compressor, I'd own something like this, not necessarily this brand; this tool in a home shop w/o a compressor would be great.

A great use is to drive up and down a pair of scissor jacks that have a 3/4" drive hex on it. I have a decent hydraulic jack and when I need to jack up both the front and the rear at the same time I put two of these type jacks on the rear sides, the hydraulic one under the engine and it's up in no time. Scissor jacks can be purchased at junkyards for peanuts.

just jam the flywheel; it's not that hard. I used the lug nut wrench, which has an angled end that works perfect. You'll need another person to help, though. One breaks loose the bolt while the other jams the flywheel.

Yes you will need an impact. Go to a Sears or other
place that sells tools and ask for an impact and he
will show you some. However if you don't have a friend
with an air compressor this will do you no good an
alternative would be a chain wrench. This device wraps
around the pulley and holds it still while you loosen
the nut. If you can get an air compressor to use get
a good strong impact like my Ingersol-Rand IR231XP
it produces 450 lb-ft torque in reverse and can take
crank bolts out in a heartbeat.
