18x8.5 wheels on the max

I just ordered EVO-5's from discount tire. They ordered 18 x 8.5 wheels. I told him that ppl run 18x7.5, but he said they would be fine...

What do you guys think?

Also is $190 per wheel a good price?

thx

Did you purchase a wheel/tire package? I have 8.5 wide wheels as well and found that thee typical 235/40/18 didn't look like it fully covered the rim. I might suggest going with a 245/40/18.

Nice price. Should work well even with a drop.

I have a set of 18x8.5 BBS's w/+40 offset and 245/40/18's. The rear right scrapes. I shaved the inside of the fender to remedy the problem. I am sitting on Illuminas & Eibachs. It's funny that the left side cleared and I had a prob w/the right. Nissan Quality!

I was told that theyy would not rub with the 235 and that BBS couldn't guarantee that the 245 would fit.

I wanted to get as close to the stock diameter as possible so I went with the 245. I suggest that you do the same, especially if you have an auto. Also, watch your offsets.

Stock 17" wheel diameter = 25.86

235/40/18 wheel diameter = 25.4

245/40/18 wheel diameter = 25.72

How did you shave the inside of the fender?? do you have a write-up?
I had 245/45/17's on her after the OEM's. it caused horrible torque steer. now i am running on 225/55/17. The ride is comfy and it helped with the wheel gap. i am going to lower her next week....

I almost got the EVO-S in 17", cause the roads here suck. The OEM front wheels have been bent before due to pot holes, and my bro's crazy ar$e driving. He can rent a car when he is town from now on...

I used a dremel and a cutting bit. Its a little squirrely and you have to have a steady hand. Use a sharpie to mark the line that you want to cut as this will provide guidance.

However, if you want to go the easy route, I know of this tire shop that uses a mini sawzall with a metal cutting blade and it works like a charm, a whole lot better than my dremel. It makes for an even cut. Get yourself one of these saws andgo to work.

Do you scrape and on what side?

after you use the dremel you should probably also sand it down too just in case if it rubs later, the sharp edges dont go into the tire

Your 17x8 is w/+35 is at the same point as my 18x8.5's are w/+40. You must be running a 245 on that wheel. I hear that it won't rub if you use a 235. In fact a 245 is a bit wide for that rim if that is what you are using. I used to toss 245's on my 5.0 when it had 8 inch wide wheels and really never had any problems. I was just told that the 245 is even a bit wide even for an 8.5 inch wide wheel.

However, I wouldn't go down to a 235 because the diameter is too small compared to the 17" wheels stock diameter.

[B]Just cut the fender with a dremel or a little electric saw, which actually works alot better than the dremel. I don't suggest rolling the fender.

By the way, perfect offset. You're at the limit for an 8" wheel. Toss a pic up.

Is that what you have on your wheels? Are you auto or manual? If auto, did you notice any performance change from the stock wheels?

i am manual..used to be auto..had a 5 spd. conversion. manual is much faster than auto imo.
stock wheels i had a long time ago..then i switched to heavy 18s with hi perf tires..now i have the sumitomos and the 17s..i like the setup i have now the most..the enkeis are like 17 lbs each..save some weight also..just the rubbing is pi$$ing me off..

It's really no problem. I would go with the saw as it is easier. I used a dremel and a really steady hand. If I had to do it over I would have used the saw, like they do down here at Wheel Warehouse (Anaheim, CA). They charge $25 per well.

I've never seen 265's on a 5th gen. You must be in a 4th gen Max.

You're correct, the right side will rub before the left. The place it rubs is where the rear bumper meets the quarter panel. The joint has too much material, and curves in to the wheel well. Nissan could have shaved this extra material off, but with the narrow stock tires and them stuck was back inside the fender wells there is no need. I used my 4.5" grinder to smooth out the seam-back to the bolt, and then put undercoat on the ground area. The tire actually rubs on the plastic bumper material. Look close where its rubbing, you'll see what I'm talking about. By the way, I'm running Volk 18x8.5, +40 offset, with 255/40/18 Pilot Sport A/S., with Eibach-I have no fender gap in the rear. Top of tires are even with the fender lip. Mine does not rub now, even with two adults in the back seat and the trunk full of luggage.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but could you give me more feedback on these tires? I'm thinking about getting them in 245/40/18 for my new Superleggera 18x8 rims with 45 offset. I know that these tires are supposed to be really good in the dry, but I've also read they are not that good in the wet although they do resist hydroplaning pretty well . . . Can you compare them to other tires you've had (besides RE92)? Thanks!

Good info! I think that you are right. I shaved my lip and the noise didn't go away until I got that part.

The wheel and tire setup on your car is insane. Can you post a pic of the rear with the 265's? What is the offset of your wheels. I think that I want to switch back to 17's from my 18x8.5's. How much does the car wander with the wide tires and are there any drawbacks. I know that it will probably be a bit slower than say a 245 tire, due to the fact that there is now more friction.

Me too, planning on getting the GRB-451's in 245/40/19 in a week or so, have seen and heard nothing but positive feedback, but the more the better! All this talk of fender rubbing makes me think I'm going to have some interesting times when I throw the new shoes on...ohwell, deal with it then i suppose

19x8.5's with a 37mm offset. 245/35/19 tires. Suspended by Tokico Blues and Tein S-techs. Not a single rubbing problem.
