Shift **** threads

I have a 20th anniversary Maxima shift **** on my 90 Maxima that the fake metal is cracking and peeling. I was thinking of getting a Sentra Vspec shift **** because they look pretty cool, even though the gate display is wrong. Does anyone know if it will fit? Or what the thread size is for either the Maxima or Sentra? I think its M8 or M10 or M12.

Also if anyone knows other cool shift ***** that fit well, I'd love to hear about em. I tried one of those universal ***** from Autozone and the universal collars fit poorly and the whole **** felt like a toy.

Thanks, Colin.

i got an ichibahn shift **** , it's got the small screws in the bottom of the neck so you can tighten it to the shifter , works well for me.

I have an AE **** and the paint is very slightly starting to peel.

If you stick with Nissan OEM styles, you shouldn't have a problem. You can get used factory nissan ones (Silvia ones are cool) or genuine Nismo ones, too.

Nismo ****
^they claim it is genuine and is a thread-on (not bolts). A little more than an AE, but it looks good.

IIRC, there are some guys with the 300zx leather shift **** (with the baseball style stitching in red) and HTPerformance (Brian in Mass) had a Mazda RX8 shift **** in his VE 5-speed that looks pretty nice.

there's the one I got.. it's for the J spec Z32, but fits in my Aztec red Maxima w/ black interior just fine.

you can also get the standard Z shift **** with black stitching if you don't like the red.

Where did you get that Sola Luna? It looks pretty cool, but I haven't been able to find a website for Sola or any distributors.

Best feeling weight for shifter

Thanks for everyone making suggestions. I'm thinking of trying a Razo shifter unless anyone recommends against it. I was looking for a shifter in the $30 range since the car is so old, no telling how long i'll keep it. And I've already spent $50 on a shifter that didn't last long.

Does anyone know what the best feeling weight for a shifter is in these cars? Razo has shifters from 46 to 240 grams. If you get it too light, it feels cheap and hard to shift, too heavy and it feels like you are shifting a Mac truck.

Thanks, Colin.

Just drive around an old 4-speed pickup for a a while and every Maxima seems like it has short, crisp shifts. Just don't ever drive a GS-R and a Maxima back-to-back.

I know this isn't the perfect answer you want, but I bought one from autozone when I owned my 89 CRX and it was perfect for me..it was the bolt on bottom..i'll check around see if i can find a pick, it looks almost exactly like the one posted above the Sola Luna or whatever but it was two tone, carbon fiber on top and brushed aluminum on the bottom

looked exactly like this but with carbon fiber on top instead of leather

I finally got a shift **** for my car, and I figured out most of my questions about thread size and interchangeability.

Maximas are currently using 10x1.25mm threads. It looks like most Nissans and Mazdas and at least some Mitsubishis, Hyundais, and Ferraris!!! use this same thread size.

I went with a chrome Sola Luna from rspeed bought through their eBay store. It looks like Sola has gone out of business so when they run out, teamvoodoo makes something similar.

The Sola has a pretty nice weight and feel. About the only remaining question is how unbearably hot it gets during the summer. So far though, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a new shift ****.

To answer any lingering questions, the SpecV and 350Z ***** all fit Maximas. I have a Spec and a Maxima and run a 350Z **** on the spec.

All are interchangable, as indicated above.

Don't get a Sola Luna!

Hi Everyone,

Just an update, I would NO longer recommend the Sola Luna shift ****.

It's not that hot in Texas yet and the **** is somewhat painful in the afternoon, but that's not the worst. The **** spins off way too easy, especially when the delrin insert gets hot. Trying to tighten it back down always makes the little bezel at the bottom pop off. There is really no way to secure the **** to the shifter shaft unless you use gobs of threadlocker.

If I really wanted another billet ****, I would go with Team Voodoo because theirs are 100% metal with no plastic inserts to come loose or flimsy bezel snaps.

Actually, the VE (Autos) didn't come with VLSD's standard. I believe some did have them though, but not standard.

i have a VE5 and done burnouts a couple of times, both wheels spins pretty evenly even turning, no torque steering like my old 88 mx-6 turbo (by the way, that little car was a beast)

EVERY VE came standard with VLSD, ALLEGEDLY there were non-VLSD trannies produced but not for the US market.

Sorry you are having problems dude, but mine has been flawless. I sometimes put a hat on top of it so it doesn't get so hot, but I've never had any problems with it unscrewing or the bezel falling off.

No worries, everyone has different experiences; and I got the thing for $20, so I can hardly complain. Most really crappy shifters at the autoparts store cost more.

In the end, it looks like its totally moot. The Maxima started running rough and I couldn't figure it out, so I took it to a mechanic. He says the #4 injector either is totally clogged or dead and would cost $500 to replace. I can't justify that much money on such an old car. So I'm in the market for a 4th gen Maxima or a Pathfinder.

I agree and I plan on doing that. But before I do, I want to have alternative transportation. I don't have anyone here I could rely on for a ride to work or the auto parts store if something goes wrong. And my projects have a tendency to go wrong and/or stretch out for weeks or months.

From looking in the service manual, it looks like it involves taking off the upper and lower intake manifold along with a bunch of stuff attached to it. Those old and hard rubber hoses and connectors could break and need replacement or fixing. I also was going to test the injector and see if I might get away with sending it off for cleaning and flow testing instead of replacement (around $15 instead of the $75 for a remanufactured one).

If I do get it running well again, I was thinking of giving the car to my dad who just got back from working in Iraq. He needs a car, but he tends to procrastinate about doing anything about it. I guess that runs in the family.

DO NOT buy a reman injector, I'm personally a bit worried about even having them sent out to be cleaned as it's the same process and it eats away the coating on the windings inside the injectors.
