My thoughts on the Toyo Proxes 4

I got the tires put on Thursday morning.

The tire is extremely quiet and has a fairly firm sidewall. I still think the sidewall could be stiffer but it is not a soft sidewall by any stretch.

These tires stick fairly well and cruise very well on the highway. I drove about 400 miles today (crossed the 50k mark ) the tire performed well on the road. Steering response beats the snot out of the Nitto 450s that were on it and the sound level is soooo much better. The downside is now I hear just how much wind and road noise their is

I got the 225/45/17 just FYI.

Anyways thought I'd share my thoughts so far. We have a big road trip to wyoming in about 2 months that'll be the true test.

Kool. I've heard nothing but great reviews on the Proxes 4s. I'm in the market for some 225 45(or 40's) 18s. Hopefully I'll get a good deal somewhere.

Cool! Thats what I wanted to hear. The reason is because I'm looking for a deal here on Long Island, NY for 2 cars. One for me and my friend. I'm looking for the stock size 225/50/17 but I see that you have the 225/45/17. Is there much of a difference there? Do you have any pics? Thanks!

I like the shorter sidewall. There's virtually no difference in the way hte car looks. The wheel gaps which are already large are about the same right now because with new tires there's of course more tread. As they wear that gap will probably become slightly more noticable but the increased response and firmer sidewall are worth it for me, so thats why I chose the 45's.

So are you saying that the tire is quiet and loud? Or that the tires are so quiet that you are now focused on the little annoying squeeks here and there in the cabin?

The tires are very quiet but now I hear the wind noise, before the tire noise was so loud you couldn't hardly hear the wind noise...now I do...its not a loud car by any stretch but definately not as quiet as the Lexus and Acura stuff I looked at before purchasing the nissan.

I very much like the Proxes 4 that I run in the summer. My only complaint is that they now have 15K miles on them and are below 50% tread they are getting considerably louder. I suppose that happens with almost all high-performance tires and it's not a big deal, but thought I'd mention it.

Besides that, they have excellent dry and wet grip, almost never squeal on hard corners, and ride quality is very good, even with a 40-profile.

for the record, my autocross tires are Hankook RS-2 Z212s, shaved to 4/32"

the toyos are for street use only, April through November.

Yeah I'm pretty much set on the Proxes. The cheapest I've seen all 4 for is 528. I was hoping not to spend more that $450 Okay $500 since I guess they would be worth it performance/comfort/durability wise. Unless you know of anything what would provide maximum comfort with such a low profile (40 or 45).

Since I'm trying to keep the comfort I'm deciding on 225 45 18.... or if I should just go with the 40 profile to prevent rubbing issues (Dropped on H-Techs). Then there's the width decision as to what looks better on 7.5 width rims. 225 or 235. I guess when it comes down to it, whatever is priced better and more comfortable.

Yeah also the fact that she's wearing 17" FN01R-Cs in autox trim and 18" G35cs regularly... = dedicated set of autox wheels/tires... hopefully you don't have a set of dedicated all season tires for autox.

I guess that way is more of a chain of educated guesses, but still.

If what I've seen is any indication, don't get the 50 series tire.

There seems to be a big difference in how that tire is made with 50-series and up vs. 45-series and under: 45-and-under gives you a great sidewall, but 50-and-over gives you nothing but mush.

Why not try 235/45/17?

Since I'm a noob with tires, can you please explain to me why get this size 235/45/17? I'm not looking to switch rims or anything, just tires. If this is a stable tire size, I'll go for it. Please explain why not the 50 series but 45 or 40. Thank you

Andy

I ultimately decided on 225/45/17 for my factory wheels because all the reading I've done and discussing it with local folks that race a lot was because the 235 is too wide for a 7 inch rim and while the shorter sidewall can help some it still has a tendancy to roll the tire over more. So because of that I chose the 225/45/17. Plenty wide, shorter sidewall and so far I love it. I'll begin racing it this spring.

mixed review

I've got the Proxie 4's on my car during the summer 245/40-18s here to protect the rims better with the wider tire. I honestly don't think there all that they're cracked up to be, although I don't have anything to really compare them to on the Maxima. I just put a set of Conti' Winter's on and so far they seem to grip better than the Proxies. It just seemed like I could spin the Proxies too easily. Just my .02
