Unrelated to heat.

Taking off the A/C belt will (obviously) stop your AC from working, but will have no effect whatsoever on your heater. If you have no heat you have a different problem

The fittings for R-12 and R-134a are very distinctly different. The R-134 have snap ring connections, the R-12 hoses screw to the charge fittings.

Basics:

Check if the compressor is cycling, or at least engaging. If it is not, most likely you lost your charge, and the dual pressure (safety switch) is stopping the A/C from engaging.
