Press on one of the valve of the low side of the system. If there exist pressure then yes you should discharge it at a shop. If there is no pressure then just take it apart.

You might as well just follow my previous link and order the ring gear and have it ship to your closest Kragen. You can return it if it turns out to be the wrong part. I don't think they charge...

Why don't you try Kragen auto parts. They sell the ring gear separate from the flywheel. If I remember correctly the oem flywheel does not come with the timing ring....
