I used the same method because I don't think you can take that piece off, its connected by two rubber band like things, if you pull on it hard enough it might snap, so the easiest fix is to put tape...

u might have to replace the stalk like others...

u might have to replace the stalk like others have suggested.... this happened to me ... everytime i turned on the lights or used the turn signals smoke came out and it smelled like burning rubber...
