Replacing valve seals on the engine

1990 Maxima
Has anyone replaced the valve seals while the head is still on the engine???
I have only one cylinder seal is leaking.
Compression is still good and even.
Lucky it's the #4 cly that...

Gas smell

When I first start it when cold, I get a gas smell for someplace.
I've looked at the lines, around the injectors, but don't see anything.
After a few minutes, the smell goes away, and is gone until...

I swapped the speedo head, and It's working fine.

Trans shifts fine, and it uses the signal from the sender.
I have another gauge someplace.

Headlight problem

I just noticed that the drivers headlight will sometimes not come on.
When it does, it comes on after the passenger side.
Bad ground someplace????
Suggestions???

Speedo problem

So the speedo works sometimes, other times it's just dead.
Also notices that the drivers side head light is coming on after the passengers side.
Related problem?????

Noticed pinging going up hills.

You might not notice it.
The low end will feel stronger, the high end will have a more steady pull.
It's more of a feel thing.
Millage will also be better.
I tried tying it in the close position....
