Sell it. You don't know how long you are going in for and why pay the insurance when you are not driving it. when you get back you can get another 4th gen or may be a 5th gen.

If you were able to charge the same battery and start up the car then it is an alternator issue. Usually if the alternator goes bad, you will see the brake light come up.

The latches are different from those 2 models. You need to remove the latch from the old one and put in the new. One is slightly bent (like 165 degrees) and one is straight.

Agree, it is most likely your alternator. I have had this issue before and i was able to drive up to 30 miles before the battery totally died. I was able to reach home though :)

Check to see how much it will cost to repair it. you can always get the car totalled and buy back from the insurance company pretty cheap. Mine did get totalled and i bought it back for 300 bucks....
