Once the shift knob is removed, i pinched the area between the cupholders and just pulled up. Its secured via clips, so pull up and back and it will slide out.

Maybe try changing your charging cable? Mine has never had an issue, and charges just as quickly as when it is plugged into my high wattage ipad adapter at home.
